 | FRANCOPHONE AFFAIRS COMMITTEE Anna Olivier, QAC branch After several years as a teacher, researcher in urban geography (PhD) and editor, in 2006 I founded Athéna Rédaction, a small editing and editing business. An EAC member since 2004, I have been responsible for francophone affairs since 2006 (with a hiatus in 2009–10). In 2009, I created a site to provide indexing services and I started to set up a small publishing house, Země. Since the fall of 2010, I have also been an editing instructor at Université Laval à Québec. To stay fit, I practice swimming and cello. | | | CERTIFICATION STEERING COMMITTEE Janice Dyer Toronto branch I have been working as a freelance editor for almost 15 years, and was one of EAC's first Certified Professional Editors. I specialize in educational publishing, and I also have a number of government and NGO clients. Over the years I have been a member of the Toronto branch exec and have volunteered for the Certification Steering Committee and Publications Committee. I live in Mississauga with my husband, two teenage children, cat (Max), and dog (Hudson). In my limited spare time, I love reading, movies, and swimming. | | CERTIFICATION STEERING COMMITTEE Anne Brennan BC branch I started editing almost as soon as I started reading. Today I'm a certified professional editor with a BA in psychology and anthropology. After 25 years in house (mostly as managing editor for magazines, websites, and post-secondary distance materials), I switched to freelancing in 2008, specializing in editing educational and technical materials, developing and building simple websites, and managing projects. I'm happiest when I'm working on content about sewing or quilting . . . or, better yet, when I'm actually sewing or quilting. | | CONFERENCE COMMITTEE Christine LeBlanc National Capital Region branch Dossier Communications I started Dossier Communications in 2005, after a decade in publishing. A true word nerd, I work on just about anything with words—books, brochures, journals, manuals, posters, reports, websites, etc. I'm also involved with event planning, from product launches to fundraisers. For two years I was the NCR programs/speaker night co-chair, then for two more years I was the branch chair. Now I'm conference co-chair and I invite you to join us in Ottawa June 1-3, 2012! | | CONFERENCE COMMITTEE Gael Spivak National Capital Region branch In addition to being on the national executive council, I am the co-chair of the EAC Conference 2012, which will be held in Ottawa in June. I also recently served on the executive of the NCR branch for two years. And I volunteer with Not Just Tourists – Ottawa, a non-profit group that helps travellers deliver medicine to countries in need. | | FORUM MONITOR Joanne Haskins Toronto branch I've been editing since 1988 and an EAC member since 1997. I've worked in-house as a magazine editor and freelance on a variety of projects, including magazines, newsletters, promotional material, books and transcripts (see http://editors.ca/profile/230/joanne-haskins) with my own company, Think Communications. Previous EAC involvement includes re-designing and laying out the EAC Toronto newsletter, Edition, as well as proofreading the print Directory of Editors. | | LIST MONITOR Mark Lindenberg Toronto branch I've worked in the communications field for over a decade as a professional writer, editor and French-to-English translator. I've been a member of EAC (on and off) for six or seven of those years, and benefited greatly from the collective professional experience of EAC colleagues. I also have memberships in the Professional Writers Association of Canada, and the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario. And in an effort to broaden my personal and professional horizons, I've recently rejoined Toastmasters to develop my skills as a public speaker, this time attending a local Toronto chapter. | | MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE Alethea Spiridon Toronto branch Over the past 11 years, I have worked with hundreds of published and emerging writers. Before striking out on my own, I was employed full time as an editor for a major mass market publisher in uptown Toronto where I acquired and edited manuscripts for over six years. I now specialize in publication development and management, particularly newsletters and magazines. I live east of Toronto with my husband and children, and can be reached through my website www.freelanceeditor.ca. | | MEDIATOR Michael Benedict Toronto branch I am a volunteer mediator with a community organization handling a variety of civil and family issues. While an editor at Maclean's, I bargained nine collective agreements, learning that the best solution to a conflict is one that both parties can agree to. After leaving Maclean's, I graduated from a University of Toronto certificate program in dispute resolution. Much earlier, I also completed one year of law school. Professionally, I was a journalist for three decades, both as a reporter and editor. I also spent six years as a director of corporate communications in the public sector. I have been a freelance writer and editor since 2005. | | MEMBER COMMUNICATION COMMITTEE Faith Gildenhuys BC branch I'm an active writer and editor of a wide variety of documents, from procedures manuals to a spy novel. Over the years, my editing has included academic papers, educational materials, trade books and personal memoirs. I was a professor of English literature at Carleton University for 25 years. While at Carleton, I held a number of administrative positions, such as director of continuing education, where I was in charge of distance education, including the university's television programming. | | | MEMBER SERVICES COMMITTEE Dee Hopkins Toronto branch | | EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE Michelle Boulton Saskatchewan branch Michelle Communications When I'm not volunteering for EAC, I keep the wheels rolling at Michelle Communications—a team of talented creative communication professionals (writers, editors, translators and designers) who specialize in custom publications. We produce everything from magazines and newsletters to books, training manuals and reports. Many of my collaborators are people I've met through EAC—which has been a real benefit of membership for me! I was a founding member of EAC's Saskatchewan branch (formerly the Saskatoon branch), where I chaired the Public Relations, Membership and Professional Development committees before I became branch chair. I represented the Saskatchewan branch on the national executive council for three years before serving two years as president. In addition to serving as past president this year, I am also chairing our nominations committee, awards committee, strategic planning task force, branding taskforce, and I am returning to Active Voice, EAC's national newsletter, as editor-in-chief. | | NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE Gilles Vilasco Quebec/Atlantic Canada branch I am a professional writer and editor and have been a member of EAC and SQRP for ten years. I love the association life: During my early involvement with EAC, I coordinated the first conference held in Montreal in 2002. Today, I use my knowledge and experience in editing and publishing into service for the association I created my business in Montreal in 1992 and offer services covering all stages of production media: research, writing, rewriting, editing (background, form), copy editing, layout and proofreading. After teaching philosophy at l'Université nationale de Côte d'Ivoire (1978–1991), I found that I still had the desire to teach and train (distance learning, University of Montreal since 1996, writing certificate from the same university since 2007). | | PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS COMMITTEE Jan Walter Toronto branch After a 35-year career in Canadian trade book publishing, I joined EAC in 2002 and became a freelance editor of general interest nonfiction. Professional development is one of my particular interests and I have taught editing and publishing courses for the Banff Centre, Simon Fraser University, Ryerson University and Humber College. In 2008 I participated in the revision of EAC's Professional Editorial Standards and now hope to see the smooth integration of those standards into other EAC programs. | | PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE Elizabeth Macfie National Capital Region branch I'm a freelance editor and indexer based in Western Quebec. I joined EAC in 1996, and I've served on the national executive council and the National Capital Region branch executive (professional development and branch chair). My clients include a variety of federal government departments, as well as publishers and a research organization. I also teach workshops on editorial skills and conduct sessions on business networking. I enjoy learning about local and family history, rowing my antique dinghy, jogging and practising my French-language skills. | | PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE Anne Louise Mahoney National Capital Region branch I have over 20 years' experience as an editor, including 13 as managing editor for a trade book publisher. I have a degree in English literature from the University of Toronto, am a graduate of the Banff Publishing Workshop, and in 2009 was one of the first crop of Certified Professional Editors. With Beth Macfie, I co-chaired the Meeting Professional Editorial Standards committee in 2010; the result was the second edition of EAC's Proofreading and Copy Editing workbooks. I live and work in Ottawa. I started my own freelance editing business in 2008 and wish I had taken the plunge sooner. | | TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE Dr. Peter J. Roccia Prairie Provinces branch I combine 15 years' experience teaching grammar, rhetoric, editing and popular culture at Grant MacEwan University, with 16 years of freelance writing and editing. My work has appeared in Avenue Edmonton, Edmontonians and Comic Talks 2005, and I've been a regular commentator on movies, rhetoric, and the TV series Smallville for ACCESS Television's Media Sense program. For EAC, I've served, in the past, as co-editor of Active Voice, chair of the Prairie Provinces branch and a test setter for EAC certification (proofreading). Currently, I chair EAC's national Training and Development Committee, and teach in MacEwan's new Bachelor of Communication Studies program. | | | VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE Dina Theleritis Toronto branch | | WEBSITE COMMITTEE Lisa Manfield BC branch I am currently the editor of BCLiving.ca, Canada Wide Media's first online-only magazine. In my 15 years in publishing, I have been managing editor at Orato.com, marketing manager at TheTyee.ca, contributing editor for Backbone magazine, business and finance editor at Suite101.com, associate editor at CGA magazine and editor of Realm magazine. I have developed print and online content, marketing collateral and courseware for UBC, SFU, the Knowledge Network, WorkSafeBC, the BC and Alberta Magazine Publishers Associations, and Magazines Canada. I was a member of Room literary journal’s editorial collective for eight years, and on the board of directors (three years as vice-president) for the Magazine Association of BC. | | EXTERNAL LIAISON COMMITTEE Carolyn L Burke, EAC executive director I advise on organizational improvement and strategic long-term growth to corporate and non-profit clients. Of interest, in 1997 I was featured on the cover of US News & World Report as the originator of the online diary and personal blog, and I have written The Ambassador Chronicles, a series of commercial fiction technothrillers. Integrity Incorporated offers a full range of management consulting and communications services. Further information can be found at www.integrityincorporated.com/management.aspx www.integrityincorporated.com/ngo.aspx | | HUMAN RESOURCES COMMITTEE Greg Ioannou, EAC president Toronto branch Colborne Communications I've been a freelancer since 1977, and have taught editing all over the place. I was a founding member of (F)EAC and have had all sorts of positions on the executive, including president twice and treasurer six times (yikes!). In real life I own and run a writing and editing company called Colborne Communications, where my office is populated with moose paraphernalia. More importantly, I captain a team in a weekly trivia league, and frequent local pubs and stamp auctions. | | NOMINATING COMMITTEE Michelle Boulton, EAC past president Saskatchewan branch Michelle Communications When I'm not volunteering for EAC, I keep the wheels rolling at Michelle Communications—a team of talented creative communication professionals (writers, editors, translators and designers) who specialize in custom publications.
