CERTIFICATION STEERING COMMITTEE Barbara Tomlin, BC branch I began editing and proofreading more than 25 years ago, first for educational and trade publishers, and then for magazine publishers. Today I work for a variety of clients and teach courses on editing topics, primarily for Simon Fraser University's Writing and Publishing Program. I was certified by the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences (BELS) as an Editor in the Life Sciences in 2004, and became involved in EAC certification in 2006. |
CONFERENCE COMMITTEE Jacqueline Dinsmore, QAC branch Fluently bilingual and formally educated as a translator, I have worked many years editing, writing and translating a variety of texts. I have taught translation and ESL and have developed and presented seminars on various aspects of translation and editing. I helped with the preparations for the EAC/ACR conference held in Montreal in 2002, which led me to write the National Conference Coordinators' Survival Guide for EAC, a handbook to help future committee chairs organize the annual conferences. I was also a test-setter for the certification program. |

FORUM MONITOR Joanne Haskins, TO branch An editor since 1988, an EAC member since 1997 and a freelancer since 1998, I've worked predominantly on magazines and newsletters but have also turned my hand to websites, promotional material, fiction, directories and, most recently, transcripts, all on a diverse range of topics (see http://ode.editors.ca/profile/230/joanne-haskins). Past EAC involvement includes cold-reading and later re-designing and laying out the EAC Toronto branch newsletter, Edition. |
LIST MONITOR Julia Cochrane, QAC branch I'm a freelance editor specializing in math and physics, with a sprinkling of other subject areas. I've been freelancing since 1995, and have never looked back. I live in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, with my husband (a math prof at Acadia University) and two cats, Pico (pictured at left) and Harry. My favourite spare-time activities are swimming, reading, knitting and running (in that order). |
MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE Anita Jenkins, PP branch Now semi-retired, I operated a successful home-based writing and editing business in Edmonton from 1991 to 2008. My clients included the provincial and city governments, school boards, universities, colleges, hospitals and aboriginal organizations. I joined EAC in 1996, when the Prairie Provinces branch was formed. My EAC roles have included chair of the PPB, co-editor of Active Voice and national vice-president, and in 2008 I was named an honorary life member. My interests/volunteer roles include music (especially CKUA Radio, Alberta's listener-supported station) and local history. |
MEDIATOR Michael Benedict, TO branch I am a volunteer mediator with a community organization handling a variety of civil and family issues. While an editor at Maclean's, I bargained nine collective agreements, learning that the best solution to a conflict is one that both parties can agree to. After leaving Maclean's, I graduated from a University of Toronto certificate program in dispute resolution. Much earlier, I also completed one year of law school. Professionally, I was a journalist for three decades, both as a reporter and editor. I also spent six years as a director of corporate communications in the public sector. I have been a freelance writer and editor since 2005. |
MEMBER COMMUNICATION COMMITTEE Faith Gildenhuys, BC branch I'm an active writer and editor of a wide variety of documents, from procedures manuals to a spy novel. Over the years, my editing has included academic papers, educational materials, trade books and personal memoirs. I was a professor of English literature at Carleton University for 25 years. While at Carleton, I held a number of administrative positions, such as director of continuing education, where I was in charge of distance education, including the university's television programming. |
NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE Cheryl Hannah, BC branch I am a communications consultant, specializing in writing- and presentation-skills training, editing and newsletter design. For the past year, I have also been chief editor, designer and house-writer for West Coast Editor; in the coming year, I will add Active Voice to my list of editorial responsibilities.
In addition to being a trainer and editor, I am an education junkie! I have an arts degree from the University of Alberta and have studied languages at Université Laval and l'Universidad Católica del Norte. Currently, I am studying magazine publishing at Simon Fraser University. |
NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE Wilf Popoff, SK branch I clarify murky documents generated by engineers, lawyers and bureaucrats, and celebrate the absence of writing ability amongst the professions. Several decades in daily newspapers prepared me for this. I set up Executive Editorial Consultants in the mid-90s to supply technical editing and writing services. Before becoming co-editor of Active Voice, I held the same job with the Prairie Provinces branch newsletter, Latest Edition, for two years. |
ONLINE JOB TOOLS COMMITTEE Alan Yoshioka, TO branch AY's Edit I'm a freelance editor, writer and indexer working mostly in the field of medical science, with religion as a major sideline. I've been volunteering with EAC for a decade and am now serving a second year as Toronto branch chair. Fellow EAC member Theresa Yoshioka and I are enjoying newlywed life in Parkdale. Oh, and I love to sing. |
PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS COMMITTEE Jan Walter, TO branch After a 35-year career in Canadian trade book publishing, I joined EAC in 2002 and became a freelance editor of general interest nonfiction. Professional development is one of my particular interests and I have taught editing and publishing courses for the Banff Centre, Simon Fraser University, Ryerson University and Humber College. In 2008 I participated in the revision of EAC's Professional Editorial Standards and now hope to see the smooth integration of those standards into other EAC programs. |
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE Perry Millar, SK branch I have been a member of EAC since its formation in the mid-80s. I now live in Saskatoon and recently returned to freelance work after 10 years as managing editor/director of a small publishing program at the University of Saskatchewan. I work for a variety of clients—corporate, academic, trade—as an editor or as an indexer. I have helped set two rounds of certification pilot tests, assisted with redrafting of the editorial standards and served on the national executive council and on branch executives. |
WEBSITE COMMITTEE Ken Weinberg, TO branch I find it an exciting time to be a volunteer leader at the EAC as a returning branch rep and as chair of the Website Committee. Since joining the EAC in 2003, I've volunteered as the branch's national rep, co-chair, assistant program chair, newsletter layout editor and newsletter chair. In my work life, I'm a technical communications specialist and curriculum developer for a large software company. After work, I enjoy yoga, movies, plays, music and healthy food from my garden. (If only I could grow dark chocolate!) I'm also an active member of Toastmasters. |
EXTERNAL LIAISON COMMITTEE Carolyn L Burke, EAC executive director I advise on organizational improvement and strategic long-term growth to corporate and non-profit clients. Of interest, in 1997 I was featured on the cover of US News & World Report as the originator of the online diary and personal blog, and I have written The Ambassador Chronicles, a series of commercial fiction technothrillers.

HUMAN RESOURCES COMMITTEE Michelle Boulton, EAC president SK branch For over a dozen years, I have been running Michelle Communications, a successful freelance writing, editing and design business. I work alone or with a network of like-minded creative professionals on projects ranging from copy editing to book design and project management. I have met many of my collaborators through EAC. I was a founding member of the Saskatchewan branch (formerly the Saskatoon branch) of EAC, where I chaired the Public Relations, Membership and Professional Development committees before I became branch chair. I represented the branch on the national executive council for three years before becoming vice-president last year. I was co-editor of the Prairie Provinces branch newsletter before co-editing Active Voice for several years. I am looking forward to the challenges of the coming year as president of EAC. |
NOMINATING COMMITTEE Moira White, EAC past president NCR branch I joined EAC in 2001 while working as an in-house editor after years of freelance writing and editing, and soon began volunteering at the NCR branch. A few terms as professional development chair led to two years as branch chair, at which point I segued into volunteering at the national level, first as NCR branch rep, then as national president (2007–2009) and now as past president. Since 2006, I have been editing, writing, teaching and coordinating projects for government and corporate clients through my company, Ubiquitext Communications. Time away from the computer finds me doing anything that gets me moving outdoors (cycling, swimming, skating, skiing, snowshoeing), or working on needlework, playing my flute or researching and writing family history. |
