 | FRANCOPHONE AFFAIRS COMMITTEE Anna Olivier Quebec/Atlantic Canada branch After several years as a teacher, researcher in urban geography (PhD) and editor, in 2006 I founded Athéna Rédaction, a small editing and editing business. An EAC member since 2004, I have been responsible for francophone affairs since 2006 (with a hiatus in 2009–10). In 2009, I created a site to provide indexing services and I started to set up a small publishing house, Země. Since the fall of 2010, I have also been an editing instructor at Université Laval à Québec. To stay fit, I practice swimming and cello. | | CERTIFICATION STEERING COMMITTEE Janice Dyer Toronto branch I have been a busy freelance editor for over 15 years, and was one of EAC's first Certified Professional Editors. I specialize in educational publishing, and I also have a number of health care, government and NGO clients. In addition, I have extensive project management and qualitative and quantitative research experience. In my limited spare time I love reading, travelling, going to movies, walking and swimming. | | CERTIFICATION STEERING COMMITTEE Anne Brennan BC branch I started editing almost as soon as I started reading. Today I'm a Certified Professional Editor with a BA in psychology and anthropology. After 25 years in house (mostly as managing editor for magazines, websites and post-secondary distance materials), I switched to freelancing in 2008, specializing in editing educational and technical materials, developing and building simple websites, and managing projects. I'm happiest when I'm working on content about sewing or quilting…or, better yet, when I'm actually sewing or quilting. | | CONFERENCE COMMITTEE Nancy Holland Nova Scotia twig I'm a technical writer and editor, specializing in online learning. I joined EAC in 1997 and started volunteering almost immediately. I was the Atlantic rep to the Quebec/Atlantic Canada branch (QAC) for a number of years, was treasurer of the Toronto branch for a year, and spent two years as the QAC rep to the national executive council. I'm now the 2013 conference co-chair. The rest of my time is devoted to running. I'm the director of Run Nova Scotia, race director of the Rum Runners' Relay, co-coordinator of the Cabot Trail Relay, on the MacPass Miles committee, and I'm a running coach. | | CONFERENCE COMMITTEE Valerie Mansour Nova Scotia twig I like to say I worked on contract long before it was fashionable. My background is in journalism—freelancing for national and local newspapers, magazines, radio and television. I always edited "on the side" and a few years ago started a company called The Writing Resource.ca to focus on editing and writing workshops. I also write food features for East Coast Living magazine, cookbook reviews for Atlantic Books Today, and I do a lot of documentary film and television research which always seem to include editing scripts and proposals! I'm keen on biking, books, film, fitness, food, gardening and travel. | | FORUM MONITOR Joanne Haskins Toronto branch I've been editing since 1988 and an EAC member since 1997. I've worked in-house as managing editor at a national trade magazine and freelance on a variety of projects, including magazines, newsletters, books, directories, promotional material and transcripts (see http://editors.ca/profile/230/joanne-haskins) as owner of Think Communications. Previous EAC volunteer work includes re-designing and laying out the Toronto-branch newsletter, Edition, and proofreading the print Directory of Editors. | | LIST MONITOR Nancy Wills Kingston twig I am a freelance editor and indexer. After many years as a manager with the provincial government, I embarked on a career change that allowed me to focus on the aspects of my former job that I most enjoyed—writing and editing. As a relative newcomer to the trade and to freelancing, I am still trying to find my niche and have taken on jobs that involve fact-checking, proofreading, indexing and anything in between. In my spare time when not reading, I am a middle distance runner. | | MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE Tina Dealwis Toronto branch I have been a writer and editor for more than 15 years. I worked as an in-house editor for a legal publisher before making the move to freelancing in 2000. Throughout my career, I have written and edited for a wide variety of publications, including legal publications, magazines, books and websites. In 2009 and 2010, I was also a contributing author of two children's books about disability sports. For EAC, I have volunteered as a copywriter and marketing representative on the Certification Steering Committee. In my spare time, I enjoy hanging out with my husband, reading, seeing live music and theatre, and playing the flute. | | MEDIATOR Michael Benedict Toronto branch I am a volunteer mediator with a community organization handling a variety of civil and family issues. While an editor at Maclean's, I bargained nine collective agreements, learning that the best solution to a conflict is one that both parties can agree to. After leaving Maclean's, I graduated from a University of Toronto certificate program in dispute resolution. Much earlier, I also completed one year of law school. Professionally, I was a journalist for three decades, both as a reporter and editor. I also spent six years as a director of corporate communications in the public sector. I have been a freelance writer and editor since 2005. | | MEMBER COMMUNICATION COMMITTEE Susan Chambers British Columbia branch With a graduate degree in social sciences (Criminology) and 10 years professional experience in institutional research, I have spent many hours designing or writing, then editing, surveys and summaries of data analyses. For the past two years, I've been travelling a new career path and reconnecting with my love of words through a variety of freelance editing projects, including memoirs, novels, non-fiction books and corporate materials. I look forward to using my talent for designing surveys and organizing information on behalf of EAC's Member Communication Committee. When I'm not working, I enjoy, walking, traveling, reading, cooking and dancing. | | MEMBER SERVICES COMMITTEE Vacant The member services committee monitors, reviews and makes recommendations about EAC's services and benefits in light of the association's aim to attract, serve and retain a diverse range of members (including editors who work in-house and freelance, in various media, in various sectors, in either official language and at all levels of experience). Where the former membership committee was concerned with ways to attract new members, the member services committee is focused primarily on ensuring existing members are satisfied with the services and benefits offered by the association. Working closely with branch membership chairs, the member services committee develops and maintains a national approach to member recruitment and retention. Volunteering has always been a benefit of membership. As such, it is part of the member services committee mandate to work with the volunteer management committee to develop and propose methods of acknowledging the contributions of members and enhancing the experience of EAC volunteers. | | EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE Carole Sigouin National Capital Region branch Having initially studied in medical laboratory technology, journalism and communications, I've developed an understanding of dry subject matters. Throughout my career as bilingual technical writer-editor-translator, I went through two cut-backs: at the Translation Bureau of Canada as Certified Bilingual Translator-Editor, then at Nortel as Senior Bilingual Technical Writer-Terminologist. In the past 12 years, I've been consulting in technical documentation design, management, writing, editing and translation: www.editechdocumentation.com. I get abreast of the most recent technologies, desktop editing tools and writing methodologies to provide 2-day workshops in technical writing in both official languages. | | ENGLISH PRINT EDITOR, NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE Pamela Capraru Toronto branch I have worked as a copy chief for 30 years, now with The Walrus and Azure magazines, and previously at Toronto Life. I started out as copy editor for TV Guide, where I mastered magazine fundamentals and took my first FEAC seminars. Part-time assignments developed into my client roster of national media companies, a major bank, a gold mining firm and a global economics consultancy. I joined EAC to network and share my knowledge. I serve on the Certification Steering Committee, and I just became the English editor for Active Voice/Voix active (print edition). After spending 11 months working from Turks and Caicos in 2010–11, I'm back in Toronto, where I'm remodelling my house in Leslieville. | | ENGLISH ONLINE EDITOR, NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE Patricia Matos British Columbia branch Based in Vancouver, I have been writing and editing for almost 10 years. My background is in print journalism, though my passion has shifted towards the vastness of the Web. When not contributing to arts and culture magazines, you can find me indulging in my culinary obsessions through my blog, or wading through endless streams of social media. I am thrilled to be part of EAC as online editor for Active Voice, and look forward to seeing how it develops. | | FRENCH EDITOR, NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE Carolyne Roy Quebec/Atlantic Canada branch I launched my translation business in 1997, and, after a three-year interlude at the Université de Montréal, where I was the project manager of the translation certificates, I decided to extend my company's services to editing and proofreading, in French and English, thanks to a wonderful team of freelancers. I regularly give conferences about translation and/or editing at the collegial and the university levels, and I have either written, edited or proofread over 20 school books. In the past, I served EAC as the francophone affairs director (2010–11), and as the volunteer coordinator for the 2010 conference in Montreal. | | PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS COMMITTEE Lynne Massey Toronto branch I've been editing since the late 1980s—sometimes in-house, sometimes freelance—and have worked on reference materials, books, journals, magazines, newsletters, websites, governance documents and member communications. For the last few years, I've been developing print and online learning materials for a professional association and then overseeing the rollout of the courses. I first joined EAC in 1997 and have since learned heaps from talented colleagues during stints as professional development chair for the Toronto branch, member of the national office staff and member of the Professional Standards Committee. | | PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE Elizabeth Macfie National Capital Region branch I've been a freelance copy editor, proofreader and indexer for 17 years (EAC-certified in stylistic editing, copy editing and proofreading). My clients include federal government departments and agencies, university presses, research organizations and communications companies. I teach workshops in editorial skills and network-building for business, and I'm a past chair of EAC-NCR. | | PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE Anne Louise Mahoney National Capital Region branch I have over 20 years' experience as an editor, including 13 as managing editor for a trade book publisher. I have a degree in English literature from the University of Toronto, am a graduate of the Banff Publishing Workshop, and in 2009 was one of the first crop of Certified Professional Editors. With Beth Macfie, I co-chaired the Meeting Professional Editorial Standards committee in 2010; the result was the second edition of EAC's Proofreading and Copy Editing workbooks. I live and work in Ottawa. I started my own freelance editing business in 2008 and wish I had taken the plunge sooner. | | TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE Emily Dockrill Jones Kitchener-Waterloo-Guelph twig Page&Screen Communications I am a freelance writer and editor specializing mainly in websites and social media but also in corporate communications (brochures, newsletters) and educational materials. I have worked as a teacher and instructional designer and still offer a series of popular seminars on writing and editing for the Web and using social media. In 2010, I founded Page&Screen Communications, and in 2011, I began teaching at George Brown College. With three rambunctious cats to keep me company, I am never truly working alone. | | VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE Lisa Goodlet National Capital Region branch I've been a part-time freelance editor and proofreader since 2005, taking on projects ranging from political science magazines to academic articles on engineering. In my day job I work for the federal government, where I've managed to make it my responsibility to edit many of our program's materials even though editing is nowhere to be found in my official job description. Outside of work, I'm a Girl Guide leader, a foster parent for the Humane Society, a traveller and scuba diver, a hockey player, and a quilter (though not necessarily a traditional one—my current project features 25 different Muppets and involves fun fur). As this didn't seem like enough on my plate, I'm on the NCR branch executive and was the speaker coordinator for the 2012 EAC conference. | | EXTERNAL LIAISON COMMITTEE Carolyn L Burke, EAC executive director I advise on organizational improvement and strategic long-term growth to corporate and non-profit clients. Of interest, I'm a certified information systems security professional (CISSP), in 1997 I was featured on the cover of US News & World Report as the originator of the online diary and personal blog, and recently I launched an ebook publishing startup, Iguana Books. Integrity Incorporated offers a full range of management consulting services. Further information can be found at www.integrityincorporated.com/management.aspx www.iguanabooks.com | | EAC REPRESENTATIVE, BOOK AND PERIODICAL COUNCIL Stephanie Fysh Toronto branch I am a downtown-Toronto-based freelance editor and proofreader of fiction, trade nonfiction and college textbooks. From 2001 to 2011, I was also an instructor in Ryerson University's Publishing certificate program, and I was program co-coordinator there for many of those years. I have been representing EAC at the Book and Periodical Council for about a decade, chaired the Book Summit Committee for some years and am currently past chair of the BPC Executive Committee. In my other time, I practise fine-art photography, bake, daydream about travelling, and try not to overparent three teenagers and young adults. | | EAC REPRESENTATIVE, FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION COMMITTEE Marg Anne Morrison Toronto branch After working in-house for almost 25 years at two book publishing firms—Between the Lines Press and Annick Press—in 2004 I started Morrison Publishing Management, a consulting and publishing management service. I taught in the Book and Magazine Publishing Program at Centennial College for seven years and am the director of the Ontario Book Publishers Organization. I joined the Freedom of Expression Committee in late 2004, representing EAC, and have been the chair since 2009. | | EAC REPRESENTATIVE, CULTURAL HUMAN RESOURCES COUNCIL Karen Virag Prairie Provinces branch I have been a professional editor for almost 20 years, after a stint as a technical writer for the oil and gas industry. I am a former chair of the Prairie Provinces branch of EAC, former national vice-president, and am currently EAC's writing and publishing rep on the Cultural Human Resources Council. In 2008 I co-chaired the national conference, in Edmonton, and in 2011–12, did the same for the project to revise Meeting Professional Editorial Standards—Stylistic Editing. My colleague Virginia Durksen and I are the Grammar Gals on CBC Radio's Alberta at Noon, a call-in show about grammar and language. They tell us we are second in popularity only to the gardening show. | | HUMAN RESOURCES COMMITTEE Greg Ioannou, EAC president Toronto branch Colborne Communications I've been a freelancer since 1977, and have taught editing all over the place. I was a founding member of (F)EAC and have had all sorts of positions on the executive, including president three times and treasurer six times (yikes!). In real life I own and run a writing and editing company called Colborne Communications, where my office is populated with moose paraphernalia. I'm also the publisher at Iguana Books. More importantly, I captain a team in a weekly trivia league, and frequent local pubs and stamp auctions. | | NOMINATING COMMITTEE Michelle Boulton, EAC past president Saskatchewan branch Michelle Communications When I'm not volunteering for EAC, I keep the wheels rolling at Michelle Communications—a team of talented creative communication professionals (writers, editors, translators and designers) who specialize in custom publications. We produce everything from magazines and newsletters to books, training manuals and reports. Many of my collaborators are people I've met through EAC—which has been a real benefit of membership for me! I was a founding member of EAC's Saskatchewan branch (formerly the Saskatoon branch), where I chaired the Public Relations, Membership and Professional Development committees before I became branch chair. I represented the Saskatchewan branch on the national executive council for three years before serving two years as president. In addition to serving as past president this year, I am also chairing our Nominating Committee, Awards Committee and branding taskforce. |
