What brand are you?
Everyone can be Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, but what about the rest of the year? Do you have a niche, an identity that says who you are, what you stand for and what skills you have to offer? Do you know what message you are sending out? Whether you are a freelance editor or writer or an in-house team member you want to identify your skills and show those who make decisions the work you can do. Your personal branding introduces you and sets the tone. To help us identify our own personal brand, we have a speaker this month from The Centre for Excellence in Communications.
Our speaker, Stephen Goban, is a founding member of The Centre for Excellence in Communications. Stephen has worked in the public and private sectors and is experienced in communications for companies, associations and government. He is a trainer and writer and has designed and delivered many courses and workshops. He is co-author of Canadian Business Writing: A Structural Approach (2nd Edition, Thomson Nelson, Toronto)
The Centre for Excellence in Communications, or CEC, is a company that delivers a wide range of communications courses. They offer solutions for communication, marketing and media challenges to people and organizations. They can be found at www.comcec.com
Come on out to find out about branding and how you can use your personal style to communicate your abilities. And don’t forget to wear your green. We’ll have a draw and other fun stuff to celebrate!
- Time: 7:30 p.m.
- Location: Travelodge Ottawa Hotel and Convention Centre, 1376 Carling Ave., Beachcomber Room

Tips &Tricks, Words and Microsoft Word...for Editors
A document is available about this topic. To receive a copy, contact NCR Programs at ncrprograms@editors.ca.
If you are looking to be more involved in your Association, network with other editors, and have some fun, we are looking for you! We are always looking for people to help on the executive or various committees. If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions, please contact Jane Hurge, Past Chair, at ncrpastchair@editors.ca.
One of the great benefits of membership in EAC is that employers advertise employment and contract opportunities to members. Positions posted through the hotline can be temporary positions, ideal for freelancers or permanent in-house positions. If you are an EAC member and looking for work, you can opt to receive employment opportunity notices by email as they become available. Your name will remain on this list until you opt out of the list. To register, click here to notify the branch that you want to be listed. Only your name and email address are needed. Do not send a résumé.
To help experienced editors who are facing job loss in the National Capital Region, EAC-NCR has assembled information on how to find employment as an editor or embark on a freelance career, as well as how to negotiate the maze of employment insurance and severance. Please visit our Job Help Pages to learn more.
Hire an Editor
If your company needs to hire an editor, you have two methods of searching for the right editor for your project. First, you can search the Editors' Association of Canada Online Directory of Editors at http://www.editors.ca/hire/index.html. The second method is to use the NCR Branch Job Hotline. Employers can send a job description including contact information to ncr@editors.ca and it will be distributed to NCR members registered with the Job Hotline.
