Editors' Association of Canada

From Concept to Completion: Managing the Publication Process

Monday, December 7, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
The Business Inn, Gilmour Room, 180 MacLaren St., Ottawa
Instructor: Jennifer Latham

Editors are sometimes in the position of watching a document grow from the first inkling of an idea to a final polished product. More often, however, the editor gets involved after a first draft has been developed, only to find that no one seems to be managing the publication process. The editor then has a unique opportunity to become involved as a managing editor or project manager.

This seminar covers all the essential details of managing the publication process:
• refining the concept
• hiring writers, editors, translators, designers
• working with the budget or creating one based on a comprehensive estimate of cost
• identifying and managing the editorial process from substantive editing to copy editing to proofreading the layout
• coordinating translation and revision of the translation
• working with graphic designers to develop creative artwork
• ensuring quality, in both editorial and design segments of the project
• working with printers and webmasters
• arranging distribution

If you work freelance, broadening your services to include this type of editorial consulting can increase your income and add a whole new dimension to your work. If you work in-house, don’t miss this opportunity to develop your editorial expertise.

Jennifer Latham is a past president of the Editors’ Association of Canada. She worked for many years as a full-time freelance editor offering editing, writing, and project management services to government and private sector clients. As a specialist in substantive editing, Jennifer has developed a process for approaching substantive jobs, and has learned all the tips, tricks, and pitfalls for this type of editing. Jennifer is currently Director of Editorial Services with the Office of the Auditor General of Canada.

Registration closes: December 1, 2009, at 4 p.m.
