Next Meeting’s Program
Monday, February 22, 2010
7:30 PM

Editors, Translators, and Working in Multilingual Environments

Editors and translators are often called upon to work on many different types of projects, and, occasionally, they work directly with each other. What are the dynamics of the editor-translator relationship? What approaches do editors and translators take with their work? How are these approaches similar? How do they differ? What makes a good translation? How can editors improve a good translation and make it exceptional?

Come to this month’s meeting to hear veteran translator Denis Louis Bousquet and veteran editor Marie-Lynn Hammond discuss working in multilingual environments and on multilingual projects. Members of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario are being invited to this special program, so there will also be many new people to meet and network with.

After many years working as a singer-songwriter and playwright, with a detour as a CBC radio host, Marie-Lynn Hammond decided to become an editor. Since then she’s proofread, in both French and English, everything from recipes to biographies to annual reports, and she has edited materials ranging from novels to United Nations documents to French translations of Dennis Lee’s poetry for children.

Denis Louis Bousquet, certified translator, is the president of the Canadian Translators, Terminologists, and Interpreters Council and the director, independent translators, of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario. He is involved with the Canadian Advisory Committee to ISO TC 37 (a technical committee on translation standards) and owns Nautilus Translation Ltd., a translation company established in 1971 that specializes in the translation of technical documents.

General Membership Meeting Information

The Toronto branch of the Editors' Association of Canada meets at 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Monday of every month (except July, August, and December).

Business Session

In addition to providing updates about the Toronto branch’s news, events, and activities, during the business session members, from time to time, will vote on matters of importance. Members and guests are also given the opportunity to ask questions or offer feedback. There are three business sessions per year, held before the program at the October, February, and May meetings.

Information Session

A 15-minute information session will be held at meetings during which there is no business session. During the information session, a member of the executive communicates updates about the Toronto branch’s news, events, and activities through executive and committee reports and discussion. The information sessions also offer members and guests opportunities for questions and feedback.
