Editors' Association of Canada

Changes Ahead

Between 2010 and 2012, EAC is adapting its certification program to reflect new professional editorial standards that came into effect on January 1, 2010.

Until the end of 2009, certification included these four tests:

  • Elementary Knowledge of the Publishing Process
  • Proofreading
  • Copy Editing
  • Structural and Stylistic Editing

Today, certification includes these four tests:

  • Proofreading
  • Copy Editing
  • Stylistic Editing
  • Structural Editing

Until the end of 2009, you could become certified in three areas:

  • Proofreading
  • Copy Editing
  • Structural and Stylistic Editing

To do so, you needed to pass the test for that skill area plus the Elementary Knowledge of the Publishing Process test.

By passing all four tests, you earned your Certified Professional Editor (CPE) credential.

Today, you can become certified in four areas:

  • Proofreading
  • Copy Editing
  • Stylistic Editing
  • Structural Editing

To do so, you need to pass only the test for that skill area.

By passing all four tests, you earn your Certified Professional Editor (CPE) credential. To maintain your certification, you must fulfill maintenance requirements. Editors certified after passing tests written in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 are not required to fulfill maintenance requirements.
