Registration Information | Registration Form | Seminar Locations | Seminar for Editors
In this seminar, we will examine specialized ways of using Word 2007/2010’s formatting tools to produce sparkling academic documents such as theses, dissertations, articles, and books. The seminar will be of interest to editors who have been asked to format such documents in a particular style and who are keen to learn more about onscreen editing. Students may be relieved to discover that a well-formatted document makes a prof or committee more receptive to their excellent arguments. Others who might find the seminar useful are people who routinely create and use boilerplate content or forms. We will look at:
- How to create a multisection document, accurately paginating the separate sections. To do this, we will examine in depth how to apply styles, build templates, and investigate the confusing characteristics of sections in Word 2007/2010.
- How to set tables, using APA style as a guide.
- How to assemble the multisection document. Once a document’s elements have been formatted, the author’s separate chapters or sections can be copied and pasted in with a minimum of travail. Then the editor can insert the table of contents, list of tables, and list of figures, using Word’s caption and TOC tools. We will find out how to edit a TOC for beauty.
- How to save time by making global changes and using the keyboard. I will share protocols for doing various editorial tasks globally, such as replacing hyphens with en or em dashes. I will reveal how to access Word’s pre-existing keyboard shortcuts, and how to create one’s own.
Since onscreen editing and formatting are envisioned, please feel free to bring along your laptop computer.
 | Mary Anne Carswell has been interested in the conjunction of form and content since her student days at U of T in the early 1960s. A poet at heart, she is deeply committed to getting the form right, because then the content can sing.
