1. CONFERENCE: Record registration!
We’re excited to announce that registration for our annual conference is the highest it’s been since the association’s first conference. With just over six weeks to go, almost 200 people have already registered for the 30th anniversary conference. There’s still time to register, so don’t miss out on the fun and excitement. NEW! Schmoozing, shopping and more
We’ve added another session to the conference lineup! Networking is an essential skill for all professionals. Whether you work freelance or in house, creating and maintaining business relationships is crucial to furthering your career. On Saturday, June 6, Riça Night gives us the keys to success with her session, Networking with Integrity. Learn how to leave a lasting impression and network like a pro. Then spend the rest of the conference sharpening your schmoozing skills.

Whether you’re looking for books, office supplies, software or the latest technological toys, you’ll find them at the conference vendor fair.
A taste of the old and the new with the pre-conference workshops
The Toronto branch is offering three exciting pre-conference workshops on Friday, June 5. Much like the 30th anniversary conference itself, these workshops will celebrate our past and help you chart the future of your career.
Eight-Step Editing
Already a legend, Eight-Step Editing is the classic workshop that gives both writers and editors techniques to improve readability. If you haven’t taken this workshop before, or you haven’t taken it in a while, now’s your chance!
On-Screen Editing with Microsoft Word 2007
Whether you’ve upgraded to 2007 or you’re just considering (and dreading) it, this workshop is a must. Newcomers to the program will learn how to work confidently with functions they have been struggling with or never knew existed; more experienced users will learn how to accomplish tasks more efficiently.
On-Screen Proofreading with Adobe Acrobat
On-screen proofreading is here, and many clients are already asking proofreaders to work in Adobe Acrobat. This workshop will provide participants with knowledge of the tools most commonly used in on-screen proofreading.

2. PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS: Get ready to cast your ballot
Voting on the draft of the revised Professional Editorial Standards starts tomorrow! Voting, emeritus and honorary life members will receive an email that contains online voting instructions tomorrow. If you have voting privileges, be sure to check your inbox.
If you have voting privileges, but don’t receive your online voting instructions tomorrow, please check your junk mail folder or email info@editors.ca for assistance.
3. CERTIFICATION: Report on the 2008 test administration now posted
The 2008 Certification Program Test Administration Report to members and an associated cover letter are now posted in Interactive Voice.
4. NATIONAL OFFICE: Electronic renewal notices and receipts
In an effort to reduce costs and cut down on the amount of paper EAC uses, the national office no longer issues membership renewal notices and receipts by Canada Post.
Members receive receipts and renewal notices, as well as a letter confirming their membership in the association (which replaces the membership card), by email when they renew. Please remember to check your email as your renewal date approaches to ensure your membership stays valid.
If you think you should have received your renewal notice by now, please check your spam filtering and white list settings to allow all emails from “@editors.ca.”
If you would like to update or submit your email address, please contact the national office at info@editors.ca.
5. OOPS AWARDS: Submit your entries by April 30
All year you’ve spotted goofs and gaffes in advertisements, not-so-scholarly journals, newspapers, bedtime reading, billboards, menus and signs seen around the globe. Nominate these infelicities for the Oops Awards and share a lighthearted laugh or three with your fellow editors.
The coordinator and host of this year’s Oops Awards is that popular guy in the tux, James Harbeck. James will present this year’s winners at the banquet of the 30th anniversary conference in Toronto.

6. EMAIL FORUM: National Job Board opportunities now cross-posted
The role of EAC Interactive Voice forum monitor has recently expanded to include cross-posting jobs from the National Job Board to the EAC email forum (discussion list). This began on April 1, but it was no April Fool’s Day joke.

EAC is linked in! If you have a profile on the online professional networking site LinkedIn, join the EAC group to start connecting with your fellow editors today.
To find the EAC group, log into LinkedIn, select “Groups” and search for “Editors’ Association of Canada.”
Please note that the EAC group on LinkedIn is an open forum that is not limited to the EAC membership. Anyone with a LinkedIn profile may join. Group membership and discussion are not moderated.
