1. CONFERENCE: Early-bird deadline fast approaching

NEW! Toronto’s Poet Laureate to speak at conference banquet
We’re pleased to announce that Toronto’s Poet Laureate Pier Giorgio Di Cicco will be guest speaker at the conference banquet. This prolific writer has authored 20 volumes of poetry since 1976. In 2004 he was the Emilio Goggio Visiting Professor in Italian Studies at the University of Toronto. In that same year, he was appointed Poet Laureate of the City of Toronto and his book, The Dark Time of Angels, was nominated for the Trillium Book Award. Di Cicco’s inspirations on building the creative capacity of cities have made him a sought-after urban consultant, and his contributions to the mayor’s Roundtable on the Arts and Culture have been widely publicized. Di Cicco is also curator of the Toronto Museum Project and Global Centre for Cities.
2. PROFESSIONAL EDITORIAL STANDARDS: Survey says
Last month EAC surveyed members about the revised draft of Professional Editorial Standards (PES). In all, 54 replied, though some skipped questions. Most respondents (87%) had more than five years of experience, and most were freelance (70%). Respondents worked on all types of materials.
The survey suggested solid support for the new standards. Answers to the main questions:
1. Is the overall structure and organization of the document logical and coherent?
Yes: 49 No: 0
2. Do the five parts of the document align well with the main competencies of editing?
Yes: 47 No: 2
3. Is the introduction to the standards clear and comprehensive?
Yes: 47 No: 2
4. Does the overall content of the standards accurately reflect the core knowledge and skills of professional editing, regardless of genre or medium?
Yes: 48 No: 1
5. Generally speaking, does the draft PES accomplish its goal of listing the standards that enable an editor to do a professional job with a minimum of supervision?
Yes: 49 No: 0
The Professional Standards Committee has made final revisions to PES based on members’ comments, most of which concerned the new Part A, The Fundamentals of Editing.
Up next? Voting members will be asked to ratify the standards. Watch for your ballot in April.

4. BUILD YOUR SKILLS: Volunteer for EAC
Looking for great professional development opportunities? Want to build a stronger professional network, better strategies for your own editing work and increased work opportunities? Consider volunteering for EAC. Volunteering is a benefit of EAC membership, and it’s the backbone of the association. Committee chairs and members are needed at the national and branch levels. Whether you’re experienced or want to learn more, EAC needs your support.
