1. IN MEMORIAM: Karen Black
With great sadness, we announce the unexpected death of Karen Black, the former membership chair of the Toronto branch, at the age of 53.
Karen died suddenly in her home on Sunday, November 8, 2009. Mourning Karen are her mother Elizabeth, brothers Douglas and David, close friends, and her four beloved cats.
Karen will be remembered by many for her warmth, humour, intelligence, generosity, and most of all for her love of animals. She was a respected colleague and a wonderful friend. As one member said, a bright light has been extinguished; she will be greatly missed.
A memorial evening and celebration of Karen especially for EAC Toronto branch members is in the works for December, and sometime in the spring a service will be held in her hometown of Waterloo, Quebec. Details of both events will be provided later. Friends are establishing an animal care fund in Karen’s name, with details to be made available as soon as possible.

2. CLAUDETTE UPTON SCHOLARSHIP: Submit your application
Student members of the Editors’ Association of Canada are invited to submit an application for EAC’s newest national award, the Claudette Upton Scholarship.
This is a $1,000 scholarship to help support continuing professional development in editing. The winner is encouraged to use the prize to attend EAC’s national conference, purchase EAC publications or attend association workshops. The winner will be acknowledged at EAC’s national conference, Reflections: Editing Content and Culture, in Montreal, on May 29, 2010.

Deadline: The application package must reach the national office by November 30, 2009.
PLEASE NOTE: Between October 22 and November 4, the national office experienced significant email service disruptions due to problems with its Internet service provider. Please be aware that emails sent to the national office during this period may not have been received.

3. CERTIFICATION: Record number of tests to be written in 2009
Just months after EAC announced the first Certified Professional Editors, certification candidates have registered to write a record number of tests in 2009. Between November 21 and 23, candidates across the country will write 118 tests—an all-time high for EAC’s landmark certification program.
We look forward to congratulating the latest certified editors at EAC’s 2010 annual general meeting in Montreal. Congratulations to all past and present members of the certification team and best wishes to the candidates.
4. CONFERENCE 2010: Get the latest info online

Reflections: Editing Content and Culture takes place May 28 to 30, 2010 in Montreal.

The deadline to submit a session proposal for Conference 2010 has been extended! If you’re a terrific speaker, submit your proposal by December 4. EAC members and non-members are invited to submit proposals. Visit the conference website for complete instructions.

There are still some positions available on the 2010 Conference Committee. Join a dynamic team of volunteers that’s working hard to create a conference experience that EAC members will be talking about for years. Visit the conference website for more information.

5. GET INVOLVED: EAC’s Publications Committee wants YOU!
Exciting changes are in store for many of EAC’s publications. Starting in 2010, EAC will print revised editions of Professional Editorial Standards, Meeting Editorial Standards and the four-volume set of Certification Study Guides.
We’re looking for a terrific team of volunteers to see these publications through print production. Our goal is to produce essential editing texts that will be used by editors, teachers and students for years to come, as well as a strong and cohesive look for EAC publications that will strengthen the Editors’ Association of Canada brand.
Available positions:
Chair, Publications Committee
- natural leader interested in working with a dynamic team of editors to produce top-quality teaching materials
- book production experience essential
Committee members
- volunteers to work/provide input on all aspects of the production process, including revision, design, layout, editing and testing
- open to members with book production experience and those who want to learn about it

6. ADVOCACY: Is Industry Canada mistreating you?
The national executive council has been made aware of the fact that Industry Canada is outsourcing work to advertising agencies in spite of the fact that it has standing contracts with many editors, including EAC members.
EAC will respond in writing to Industry Canada. The letter will explain that Industry Canada’s actions have affected a number of EAC editors and ask how it intends to address the matter.

7. WEBSITE: National Job Board notices on email forum (“The List”) end December 1
Hundreds of job-seeking members from across Canada have signed up and are receiving National Job Board notices directly in their inboxes. As of December 1, 2009, National Job Board notices will be listed on
Interactive Voice and delivered via email subscription only; they will no longer be sent to the EAC email forum.

10. NATIONAL OFFICE: Scheduled telephone service disruption November 23
