1. SAD NEWS: Long-time EAC member Claudette Reed Upton passes away
Long-time EAC member Claudette Reed Upton died on October 11 in the Cayman Islands. Claudette was a member of the BC branch, an EAC honorary life member and former national vice-president. She is remembered with great affection, respect and a sense of loss by her many friends and colleagues.
2. CERTIFICATION: Register by October 27
The registration deadline for the 2008 certification administration is fast approaching. Be one of the first editors to take the Structural and Stylistic Editing test as you continue to work toward your Certified Professional Editor (CPE) designation. We look forward to congratulating the first editors to receive EAC’s CPE designation at the 2009 annual general meeting.
For more information and to register online, go to EAC’s Certification website. Registration closes on Monday, October 27, 2008, at 1 p.m. EDT. As an EAC member, you benefit from discounted pricing on the certification tests—plus extra savings if you register for more than one test.
3. NATIONAL OFFICE: National office to start issuing electronic renewal notices and receipts this fall
In an effort to reduce costs and cut down on the amount of paper EAC uses, the national office will no longer issue membership renewal notices and receipts by Canada Post.
Members will continue to receive receipts and two renewal notices, as well as a letter confirming their membership in the association (which replaces the membership card) when they renew. This fall, members who have submitted an email address to the national office will begin to receive these notices electronically. If you would like to update or submit your email address, please contact the national office at info@editors.ca.
4. PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS: Update on revising Professional Editorial Standards
The next stage of revising Professional Editorial Standards involves submitting the standards we drafted over the summer to a target group of experienced editors outside EAC. Why? We need to make sure the revised standards reflect Canadian editing as a broad profession, and not just editing as practised within our association.
That stage is taking a bit longer to organize and administer than we’d expected. As a result, our current plan is to present the draft standards to the EAC membership for review in January, instead of in late November as we’d originally hoped. So keep an eye out for the new draft in the new year.

5. 30th ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE: Volunteer for Conference 2009
“Celebrating the Past, Charting the Future: The 30th Anniversary Conference” is set for June 5–7 in Toronto. There are still opportunities to join the local conference team. Committee members are needed for roles ranging from conference co-chair to party planners to webmaster to coordinator of conference volunteers.
Volunteering for EAC brings many benefits. It enables you to meet other editors and network with colleagues. It’s a chance to show off professional and leadership skills you already have or to build new ones. You can make a difference to this important anniversary year conference.

6. CODE OF ETHICS: Volunteers needed
EAC is developing a code of ethics to promote high standards of editing and to establish a framework for professional behaviour and responsibility. If you have experience developing a code of ethics, or if you’d like to know more, consider joining our volunteer task force. 7. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE: 2,008 in 2008
With your help EAC’s membership has grown to more than 1,800 members, but we’re not finished yet! Help EAC’s membership increase to 2,008 in 2008. Refer a new EAC member by December 31, 2008, and you’ll earn a recruiting reward of up to $25 per new recruit.
