Editors Canada webinars are here!

Since 1979, Editors' Association of Canada (Editors Canada) has been delivering high-quality, local training for editors at every stage of their careers. We're proud to announce we're now also offering webinars, giving anyone with an Internet connection the opportunity to keep up on their professional development.

Train online with Editors Canada

We're kicking things off this spring with three first-rate webinars* presented by experienced instructors.

Social Media for Professional Communicators

Description
No longer the domain of tweens, teens and twenty-somethings, social media is now a powerful marketing tool for companies and individual professionals alike. Leveraging this tool, however, requires a new set of knowledge and skills. This webinar is designed to help professional users create and execute an effective, sustainable social media strategy.

Instructor
Although a latecomer to the Internet, Emily Dockrill Jones has been working in web publishing for more than a decade. True to her technophobe leanings, she was a late adopter of Facebook, Twitter and all things social media, leaving them to her twenty-something brother and his cohort. A change in her job description, however, forced her to learn quickly (mostly from her twenty-something brother), and today she is a recognized social media practitioner and consultant. She feels uniquely qualified to teach this seminar because if she can master social media, anybody can.

Punctuation, Period!

Date: Thursday, June 2, 2016
Time: 1 p.m., EDT / 10 a.m., PDT
Length: 1.5 hours
Member price: $56.25
Non-member price: $75
  Registration closed

Description
In this webinar we'll cover the top punctuation pitfalls and predicaments facing Canadian language professionals. After a brief look at past and present trends, we'll demystify the comma; dip into semicolons, colons and hyphens; and discuss when to stick to the rules and when (judiciously) to bend them. Test yourself with a warm-up exercise (provided in advance) and get ready to immerse yourself in marks.

Instructor
Frances Peck (West Coast Editorial Associates) is a writer and a Certified Professional Editor (Hon.). She teaches editing at Simon Fraser University and Douglas College in Vancouver, and gives workshops for editors, writers and translators across Canada. She co-authored the HyperGrammar website and wrote Peck's English Pointers, a collection of essays and quizzes available on the Language Portal of Canada.

Creating Compelling Web Content

Time: 2 p.m., EDT / 11 a.m., PDT
Length: 2 hours (1 hour each session)
Member price: $75
Non-member price: $100
  Registration closed

Description
As it becomes more and more difficult to attract readers to your website—and keep them there, how can you ensure that your digital content engages online audiences? Effective web editing comes down to three key strategies—understanding web readers, knowing enough about search optimization to ensure copy is found, and making the most of social media sharing.

Instructor
Lisa Manfield is a writer, editor and content strategist. She has developed print and online content, marketing collateral, and courseware for small businesses, non-profit organizations, government agencies and educational institutions. Currently a digital writer at tech startup Chimp, she has also been the editor of BCLiving.ca, managing editor at Orato.com and marketing manager at TheTyee.ca. She also teaches Writing and Editing for the Web at Simon Fraser University.
