Celebrating a decade of gold-standard editing

2017 marks the 10th year that Editors Canada has awarded editing designations through its landmark professional certification program. Since the program’s launch, Editors Canada has awarded 253 certifications to 113 professional editors.

“We literally set the standard for professional editing in this country and blazed the trail for excellence when we launched the Editors Canada professional certification program 10 years ago,” says president Anne Louise Mahoney. “We are proud to recognize these exceptional editors and the decade of certified editors who preceded them. Congratulations to all of them on this official recognition of their skill, dedication and determination.”

Editors Canada created its certification program to promote and maintain professional standards of excellence, to help editors develop professionally, and to enhance the status of editing as a profession in Canada. As recognition of professional certification continues to grow, the benefits increase for corporations, governments, not-for-profit organizations, educational organizations, publishing companies, and individuals seeking professional editors with superior levels of knowledge, experience and skills.

Testing on computers launches this year

After extensive research and pilot testing, Editors Canada is pleased to announce that its 2017 professional certification tests will be administered on computers. The association has been hard at work creating tests that are as close to the “real-world” editing experience as possible, while still maintaining that gold standard of excellence the program is known for.

To support the new computer testing platform, Editors Canada has created new test preparation guides. These go-to resources for anyone who wants to become a certified editor are based on the latest Professional Editorial Standards and are now available directly from Editors Canada.

Registration opens in July for the computer-based copy editing and stylistic editing tests, which will be held in cities across Canada in November 2017.

About Editors Canada

Additional information about Editors Canada professional certification is available online.

Editors Canada began in 1979 as the Freelance Editors’ Association of Canada to promote and maintain high standards of editing. In 1994, the word “Freelance” was dropped to reflect the association’s expanding focus to serve both freelance and in-house editors. As Canada’s only national editorial association, it is the hub for 1,300 members and affiliates, both salaried and freelance, who work in the corporate, technical, government, not-for-profit and publishing sectors. The association’s professional development programs and services include professional certification, an annual conference, seminars, webinars, guidelines for fair pay and working conditions, and networking with other associations. Editors Canada has five regional branches: British Columbia; Saskatchewan; Toronto; Ottawa–Gatineau; and Quebec/Atlantic Canada, as well as smaller branches (called twigs) in Calgary, Edmonton, Manitoba, Kitchener-Waterloo-Guelph, Hamilton/Halton, Kingston, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
