Profile

My expertise is editing fiction (including children and YA), as well as creative non-fiction, poetry, scripts, articles, newsletters, brochures — the list goes on. I am always available to proofread materials in my subjects of interest. I have copy editing experience with local indie publishers and small businesses, and developmental, structural, and stylistic experience with diverse freelance clients. I am always updating my resources to help self-publishing authors make informed decisions.

Before turning my passion for editing into a career, I pursued education and journalism. For 6 years, I dedicated myself to teaching K–12 English and mathematics. In that time, I developed a deep appreciation for language accessibility in public spaces. Plain language principles became paramount in daily interactions with students (and their parents) studying English as a second language. I apply those principles of inclusivity and accessibility when working with businesses and other public access companies to rewrite their content.

In my pursuit of journalism, I concentrated on social justice issues affecting my queer community and problems of global gender inequality. Today, my daily dose of news always includes articles, blog posts, and videos on feminist media sites such as BITCH, Everyday Feminism, and Feministing. When I visit my local bookstore, I search for new publications that weave intersectional politics into their prose — whether deliberately or as an unintentional by-product of the divisive culture we find ourselves in.

There are a great many subjects that I find engaging — from crafting and gardening to institutionalized discrimination and human rights issues. I am passionate about assisting LGBTQ authors, as well as other marginalized and under-represented groups, to succeed in publishing their work. My favourite fiction genres include thrillers, dramas, and fantasy, while I am partial to memoirs and investigative journalism in non-fiction titles.

I hold an Honours BA in English Literature from Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario, and a Certificate in Editing from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, BC. Through Editors Canada, I attend professional development meetings, seminars, and workshops. I am committed to maintaining the highest standards of practice, and keeping myself apprised of the latest developments in the industry.

I volunteer monthly for Blue Pencil Sessions at VPL’s South Hill Branch: workshops that provide writers with a 30-minute editing consultation of their project. This is an excellent way for writers to connect with local editors and get professional advice — it’s also affords new authors the opportunity to ask questions about the editing process and the publishing industry.

Follow me on Twitter (@katlynhebert91) for a sampling of the books, articles, and blog posts I recommend reading. I have lovingly curated a feed dedicated to celebrating Canadian literature, specifically focusing on local Vancouver authors, marginalized voices, and social justice and feminism in publishing.
