Your software configuration will determine how PDF files are handled. For example, when you click on a PDF link, the document may open within your web browser or it may automatically download to your hard drive. To override your default settings and choose how to handle a file, either right-click (PC) or control-click (Mac) on the PDF link. Then select your preference from the pop-up menu.

Now's the time to register for Conference 2008: Editing in the Global Village! As an EAC member, you can register at a special early-bird discount—but only until Wednesday, April 30. EAC student members who take advantage of the early-bird pricing will also benefit from a reduced rate.

Conference 2008 will feature something for everyone so, whether you're a novice or an expert, please join us in Canada's Festival City as we explore the editing profession from a global perspective.

3. MEMBERSHIP: Fee change effective March 1
On November 29, 2007, the national executive council voted to increase membership dues up to 5%. An increase in all membership fees went into effect on March 1, 2008. The new fee schedule is as follows:

Qualifying and Voting Members: $176.00 + $8.80 GST = $184.80
Student and Emeritus Members: $88.00 + $4.40 GST = $92.40

How does this fee change affect you? If your renewal date is on or after March 1, 2008, you will renew at the new rates.

4. CERTIFICATION: Congratulations, 2007 certification candidates!
This week results of the 2007 certification administration were mailed to candidates. The national executive council is delighted to announce that the 2007 administration produced the first EAC Certified Copy Editors and the latest Certified Proofreaders. EAC applauds all candidates who continue to take part in the certification program and pursue the Certified Professional Editor (CPE) designation.

The Elementary Knowledge of the Publishing Process test and the Copy Editing test will be offered in 2008. The Proofreading test will not be offered in 2008, but will be offered again in 2009.

The fourth and final study guide, on structural and stylistic editing, will be available in the summer. Order the copy editing, proofreading and elementary knowledge of the publishing process volumes now.

5. NATIONAL OFFICE UPDATE: Office relocation
EAC's national office is movin' on up! To the southeast side. Later this month the association's national headquarters will move from 502–27 Carlton Street to a renovated suite across the hall. The office's phone and fax numbers will remain unchanged, but as of March 24 its new address will be 505–27 Carlton Street, Toronto, Ontario, M5B 1L2.

The national office staff looks forward to moving into its sunnier space and thanks members in advance for their patience during the transition period.

The EAC national e-news update is produced on behalf of the national executive council by the national office.
