We encourage all student members, no matter where they are in their studies, to submit an application for EAC's Claudette Upton Scholarship. EAC's student membership is a relatively modest in size, so the chances of being selected are excellent!
What is the Claudette Upton Scholarship?
This is a $1,000 annual award that recognizes a promising student editor from among EAC's membership. Established in 2009, the award is named in memory of EAC honorary life member Claudette Reed Upton-Keeley.
Who was Claudette Upton?
Claudette was a gifted editor who loved the English language and was actively involved in social justice and environmental causes throughout her life. She taught editing courses and was a much-loved mentor to many.
If I receive the award, what can I do with the scholarship money?
The $1,000 scholarship is the recipient's to spend on continuing professional development in editing. The recipient is encouraged to use the scholarship to attend EAC's national conference, purchase EAC publications or attend association workshops. The recipient will be acknowledged at EAC's national conference, in Toronto on June 7, 2014.
Do I have to be an EAC member to apply?
Applicants must be current student members of EAC. If you know a student who does not belong to the Editors' Association of Canada and who would be interested in this opportunity, please pass this message along and encourage them to join EAC. How do I apply?
Application packages must include the following documents:
- a reference letter from an instructor in the applicant's course or program;
- a resumé (two pages maximum) describing the applicant's education and work history; and
- a 300-word statement in response to the following question: “Editorial work will continue to evolve over the next decade. How do you plan to ride the wave?"
