Liat Radcliffe Ross, DPhil (Oxford)

Profile

Dr. Liat Radcliffe Ross is a freelance editor specializing in academic and non-profit work.

Liat has been editing, writing and doing research for more than 15 years. She has worked in academia, print journalism, policy research and finance in the United States, Britain and Canada. Liat earned her doctorate in international relations from the University of Oxford.

Examples of Liat's academic editing include a PhD dissertation on gender and indigenous identity, a journal article on Middle East politics and a manuscript submitted to the Journal of Zoology, written by a team of non-native English speakers. She has also edited a job application for a professorship in Theatre. As an academic, she published several articles about the foreign policy interests of Muslim minorities in the US, UK and Canada, and did postdoctoral research about Islam and humanitarianism in North America.

Liat has edited a wide variety of online communications - such as websites, newsletters and blog posts - for international NGOs, including a development charity in Africa and an environmental conservation organization. These projects have given her experience in working with authors for whom English is a second language and allowed her to learn basic website development, including Wordpress.

Other relevant work experience includes a multi-year stint as a journalist at Newsweek magazine and a year-long research assistantship at a Washington, D.C.-based think tank.

Liat has honed her professional editing skills in recent years by taking a copy editing course at Ryerson University as well as numerous workshops offered by the Editors' Association of Canada on topics such as scholarly publishing and online communications.
