Julie McGonegal

Profile

Strong writing is as much about style as it is about substance. As a published author and editor with a PhD in English, I am deeply committed to helping my clients convey nuanced ideas with clarity and eloquence. Let me help you craft language that delights and illuminates. I offer a full range of editorial services and a genuine spirit of support.

I specialize in serious non-fiction, including academic writing, and invite manuscripts in the fields of literature and the arts, politics and history, sociology and social work, health and education, and philosophy and religion. I have a strong interest in projects related to social justice and human rights, together with a solid background in working with non-profit organizations.

Bio

In addition to having taught university-level courses in the humanities and social sciences for more than a decade, I have published extensively in academic journals and popular magazines. Reviewers of my book Imagining Justice praise its lively and accessible prose, interdisciplinary vision, and theoretical sophistication. I have co-edited a substantial book of essays, sat on the editorial boards of scholarly journals, and reviewed more books and articles than I can count. As a successful OGS and SSHRC applicant, I am well positioned to review grant materials.  Finally, I have a passion for social justice issues and solid experience in working with non-profit organizations in the creation of a variety of materials, including blogs, articles, newsletters, and website content.

Testimonials

"Julie is well-informed, prompt, has a keen eye for detail, and is genuinely engaged in the work she is reading. She is a pleasure to work with. Thank you, Julie!" -- Dr. Chandrima Chakraborty

"I have worked with many editors, but Julie was the only one who truly did a superb job. She was attentive to my writing style, and to the message that I was trying to convey. She made my PhD dissertaton sound better, and more intelligible. She is definitely the best editor that I have ever worked with, and I highly recommend her."-- S. Diab, PhD

"I want to stress what a positive and rewarding experience this has been for me. If I hadn't contacted you for your editorial services, my paper would probably still be sitting on my desk, untouched and unread. I wanted to convert the paper into an article, but I felt overwhelmed and uncertain. Truly, your advice about how to restructure and supplement the paper was the kickstart I needed, giving me the motivation to move forward with confidence. What's more is that I was able to revise, and then revise and resubmit, the paper without getting sidetracked or falling behind on my dissertation writing--in large part because I was able to rely on your consultation and advice to walk me through every step along the way. You've helped me to manage my time and keep my anxiety levels to a minimum. I can't thank you enough."-- Lindsay Diehl, PhD Candidate, University of British Columbia

"Julie McGonegal is much more than an editor: as someone who becomes closely connected with your work, she becomes a trusted advisor. Her ideas are informed, as she has a wide knowledge base. She is a generous person who is committed to delivering the best possible product. Her service is prompt and professional, and she meets agreed-upon deadlines. My writing is more concise and precise by working with her."-- PhD candidate, University of Toronto

"Julie McGonegal has always done outstanding edits and critiques of my essays for publication. She is accurate and complete in copyediting with quick turnaround, and her genuine and constructive suggestions have improved my essays immeasurably... With her keen insight and critical mind, she was exactly the first reader I needed for transforming the unruliness in my writing into highly readable material. I am delighted to have found her and look forward to working with her again." -- Rachel Hung, Associate Professor, National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan

"I just finished reading your comments and corrections, and was very impressed. They were brilliant. Your comments were insightful and your corrections were well explained.  Also, I cannot thank you enough for your promptness. I would gladly recommend you to anyone seeking an editor and look forward to working with you again in the near future." -- Sandra Comeau, PhD

"Thank you so much for all your help. You've done such a great job with the editing!  My heartfelt thanks for being so incredibly supportive, flexible and responsive!"-- Kathy Li, Senior Policy Analyst at the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, PhD in Health Policy
