Tammy Burns

Profile

I have over six years' experience in communications as both a writer and editor. My areas of expertise include employment law, human resources, and health and wellness, as well as various forms of corporate communications. I have extensive experience editing business articles, legal articles, marketing materials, and government correspondence. In addition to my freelance work, I currently work in-house as the web editor for Benefits Canada magazine. I have also worked as an in-house editor for a legal publisher and as a copywriter for a digital marketing firm. Prior to working in publishing, I worked in the legal departments of the Ministry of Community and Social Services, the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, and the Ministry of Labour.

I am an active member of both the Editors' Association of Canada and the Professional Writers Association of Canada, and maintain my professional development by participating in seminars and conferences offered by both of these organizations. I regularly attend workshops on publishing-related topics such as business marketing, social media, website editing, and copyright law.

Currently, I act as publications chair for the Editors' Association of Canada's Toronto branch, and as a copywriter for the association's Public Relations and Marketing Committee. Previously, I volunteered as managing editor for Edition, which is the association's Toronto branch newsletter.

I have a specialized honours B.A. in psychology, two years of training in psychotherapy and counselling, and a post-graduate certificate in magazine publishing.

In addition to corporate and government editing, I also write news, lifestyle, health, and travel pieces. My work has appeared in the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, the Hamilton Spectator, Diabetes Dialogue, BOBBi, and NOW, and on the websites blogTO, 29 Secrets, Shop Talk, and The Circumference. My travel blog, AnywhereAndHere, is at http://anywhereandhere.com.
