Analytical and creative: I edit and I write. I’ve copyedited a Giller-Prize-winning novel and edited and proofread other novels, short stories, UN reports, annual reports, screenplays, magazine articles, educational materials, and more. I've also taught copyediting at the university level. Clients love my lively rewrites, and my magazine articles have won awards. (My trickiest commission: a humour piece on government cutbacks. You're laughing already, right?) I’ve worked on everything from cookbooks to needy first novels to the French translations of Dennis Lee’s children’s poetry. I've helped people tell their personal stories and shepherded their work from diamond-in-the-rough manuscripts to polished books ready for publishing. In my previous lives I cofounded a rootsy band, had four plays produced, co-wrote a feature film, and hosted two arts-oriented CBC radio shows. I still write songs and perform occasionally. Clients include Key Porter, Penguin, Thomas Allen, Chatelaine, Prentice Hall, OPSEU, CUPE, and Bryan Mills Iradesso, a communications company. I have a BA with distinction in English literature, and I've taken a number of editing courses. I’m fairly fluent in French (it was my first language), and I'm old enough to have actually been taught grammar in school. Quotes from happy clients: "Of all the excellent copyedits I've received over the years, Marie-Lynn Hammond's was by far the best. Her work on Half Blood Blues was incredibly sensitive and astute." -- Esi Edugyan, author of Half Blood Blues, winner of the 2011 Giller prize, and short-listed for the Man Booker Prize, the Rogers Writers Trust Prize, and the Governor General's Award. "Beyond Reports has hired all types of editors in over 12 countries. When we want the best, we hire Marie-Lynn Hammond. It really is that simple." -- Director of Project Development, BeyondReports “The novel is so much stronger now with the work you've done on it!” [Re a novel I edited for a major Canadian publisher] “I feel as though I should be sending you a box of chocolates. Really expensive chocolates. Thanks again for all your help and hard work on Xxxxx. Due to you it’s in good shape. Something I could not imagine about 2 weeks ago.” [Re the edit of a children's novel for an educational website]
“Please tell Marie-Lynn Hammond that she rocks!” [Re the edit of a truly dismal translation from Russian to English]
