Mary Newberry

Profile

I am an editor and an indexer in scholarly and trade publishing. I am also an editor at the literary magazine Descant, where I was the managing editor for 5 years (2001-6). Through Descant, I came to edit both fiction and poetry. I have an MA in English and a BA in literature and political science. I studied editing in various forms at Ryerson, and since then at many editing and indexing courses and seminars. I teach indexing at Ryerson and have taught editing for a number of college and university publishing programs.

Jennifer Nelson, author of Razing Africville (UTP 2008) wrote, “Mary Newberry worked as both an early consultant and, later, my copy editor . . . her attention to detail and her ability to decipher and clarify many threads of argument at once are rare gifts.”

Sarah Casteel, Second Arrivals: Landscape and Belonging in Contemporary Writing of the Americas (Univ of Virginia Press 2007) said, “Thank you very much for the tremendously thoughtful and thorough job you have done. I'm very grateful that I have been able to work with you on this and that my book will have such a fine index as a result.”
