Localization (more specifically known as “Canadianization” or “Americanization,” depending on the market) means taking a document prepared for use in one place and reworking it so that it can be used somewhere else. The main editorial market for this skill is book publishers, but new markets are appearing, such as corporations preparing Canadian versions of their websites or marketing copy. Done properly, localization goes beyond merely checking for local variants in spelling and grammar. You may also have to adapt content to suit the new market. This seminar tells you where to find the work and how to do it.
 | Instructors: Greg Ioannou, current vice-president and former national president of EAC/ACR, has copy edited fiction, non-fiction, textbooks, government reports, and corporate publications. He owns Colborne Communications, a 11-person editing company that does extensive localization work.
Nancy Foran has North Americanized books from England, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, and Italy. As an in-house production editor with Firefly Books, she worked almost exclusively on packages from overseas publishers. She is now a freelance editor and continues to work primarily in trade non-fiction. She has edited books on subjects as diverse as menopause, calligraphy, Nobel Prize winners, and professional wrestling. |
