AWARDS COORDINATOR

Zofia Laubitz

Zofia Laubitz
Editors Québec
I first contemplated becoming an editor when I was wondering what someone with a doctorate in linguistics who didn't want to become a professor of linguistics could do instead. It seems to have been a good choice: I've been an editor and translator, first in-house and then freelance, for more years than I care to say. I joined Editors Canada in 1995 and have volunteered at the national and branch levels. In my free time, I enjoy birding, photography, art lessons and, of course, reading.

CAREER BUILDER COMMITTEE

Glenna Jenkins

Glenna Jenkins
Editors Atlantic
I am an academic editor for scholars who are non-native English speakers and writers. I provide copy and stylistic editing as well as assistance with manuscript organization.

Lynne Melcombe

Lynne Melcombe
Editors British Columbia
I started out as a freelance journalist over 30 years ago. I have worked in communications and publishing for over 25 years. My editing skills include developmental, substantive, stylistic, and copy editing and proofreading. My book clients range from self-publishing novices to seasoned authors, and I also work on government, post-secondary, non-profit and corporate documents. I offer seminars/webinars and especially enjoy coaching new writers. I live in a house with a big garden in Port Moody, BC, and work with a small, furry associate named Tessa.

CERTIFICATION STEERING COMMITTEE

Jaime Miller

Jaime Miller
Editors Calgary
I have been editing in some capacity since 2005, when author friends asked me to edit some of their children's fiction books. I have a degree in European Studies, with a minor in English, from the University of Guelph, and have done some editing courses through Ryerson University's publishing program. Because I lived in Australia for ten years, I joined the Australian Institute for Professional Editors and became one of IPEd's first accredited editors in 2008. Although I worked for a couple of years as an in-house editor for a superannuation company, most of my work has been freelance editing. I especially enjoy providing structural, stylistic and copy editing services to self-publishing authors—there's always something new to learn! I joined Editors Canada in 2010, when I moved back to Canada, and have been volunteering in a couple of different roles since 2016.

Sarah Robins

Sarah Robins
Editors British Columbia
My editing career began in university, when I was hired to edit transcripts of market research focus groups about tequila. After graduating with my degree in French Language and Literature, I took a position at an educational publisher and spent the next decade editing test questions for high school prep guides. Since 2013 I've been a full-time senior technical editor at a large energy company. I live in beautiful Vancouver, BC, with my partner, four children, grumpy cat and socially anxious dog.

FRANCOPHONE ADVISER

Sylvie Collin
Editors Québec
I started my career as an instructor and in-house training manager before becoming an editor. Today, as a réviseure agréée, I continue to promote the value of professional development. I became involved with the Editors Quebec executive committee when I first joined Editors Canada, in 2014. Since then, I have collaborated on a regular basis with several national committees. Being involved with Editors Canada convinced me of the need for francophone members to be present at all levels of the organization. The executive council's commitment to serve its francophone members cannot translate into action without the active participation of the francophone members themselves.

LIST MONITOR

Nancy Wills
Editors Kingston
I am a Kingston-based freelance editor and indexer. After many years with the provincial government, I embarked on a career change that allowed me to focus on the aspects of my former job that I most enjoyed - writing and editing. As a relative new-comer to the trade and to freelancing, I am still trying to find my niche and have taken on jobs that involve fact-checking, proofreading, indexing and anything in between. In my spare time when not reading, I am a middle distance runner.

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE

Merel Elsinga

Merel Elsinga

I have a background in (Dutch) law and a post-professional lingering passion for sailing and cooking. My career mission is to help lawyers in the private sector create plain language contracts. My Editors Canada mission is to create more awareness for our association.

I joined Editors Canada shortly after graduating from the University of California's Professional Sequence in Editing program. I edit mostly fiction at Iguana Books in Toronto and at Moon River Editing. When I'm not working, my kids and garden keep me busy. I launched my second career—in publishing—after nearly a decade in the non-profit sector and years of editing friends' essays, CVs and cover letters. I completed Ryerson's Certificate in Publishing in December 2020 and have been a member of Editors Canada since March 2020, beginning as a student affiliate. Since becoming a member, I've attended webinars and volunteered to copy edit articles for the Editors Toronto BoldFace blog. I'm currently employed as an acquisitions assistant at Canadian Scholars. When I'm not working, I'm reading (fantasy, magical realism, historical fiction), watching horror movies, eating spicy foods and bothering my cat.

This year, my objective is to support ongoing efforts to make our Professional Editorial Standards and professional certification exams even more relevant and accessible for editors in Canada and around the world.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

Greg Ioannou

Colborne Communications
I've been a freelancer since 1977, and have taught editing all over the place. I was a founding member of (F)EAC and have had all sorts of positions on the executive, including president three times and treasurer six times (yikes!). In real life I own and run a writing and editing company called Colborne Communications, where my office is populated with moose paraphernalia. I'm also the publisher at Iguana Books. More importantly, I captain a team in a weekly trivia league, and frequent local pubs and stamp auctions.

VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Ren Baron
Editors Toronto
I am a Toronto-based freelance editor new to Editors Canada. I primarily edit academic work in the Humanities and Social Sciences, with a particular focus in film studies and international relations. In 2018, I graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in History, East Asian Studies and Spanish, and I will complete my Editorial Skills Certificate at George Brown College this spring (2022). My favourite fiction genres are fantasy and mystery, and I'm currently learning how to play platformer video games for the first time in my life.
