Editors Canada Volunteer Participation
- Toronto Branch (2017, 2018, 2019)
I’m an experienced communications professional with 10+ years’ experience in writing, editing, and translation. I’ve worked mostly in the non-profit sector and academia but also have experience in research and online media. I’ve taught English at the American University of Armenia, managed the production process of print materials for a legal advocacy organization, translated a booklet of a report on human rights violations of LGBTQ+ people in Armenia, researched factors affecting media trust, and developed a grassroots campaign to raise awareness on domestic violence in Armenia. I have many interests, but the core of what I do is communicate: I help people and organizations distill their thoughts and ideas into language that’s accessible for their audience, adapting the message for various products and platforms.
My educational qualifications include a certificate in editing from George Brown College, an honours bachelor of arts degree in psychology from York University, a master's degree in communications from Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and recently, a certificate in publishing from The Chang School at Ryerson University. I am a lifelong learner, engaged in ongoing professional development.
For two years, I volunteered my time on the Editors Toronto executive as editor-in-chief of BoldFace, the official blog of Editors Toronto. Currently, I volunteer as the proofreader and social media coordinator for The Editors' Weekly.
Besides my active involvement in Editors Canada, I am also an Intermediate Member of the UK-based Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (formerly, the Society for Editors and Proofreaders) and abide by its Code of Practice.
In December 2019, I edited and did the back-of-book index for a self-published vegan cookbook, while in February 2020, I proofread a cookbook for Penguin Canada. I very much enjoyed these experiences and, as an avid cook myself, I would love to copy edit, proofread, and index other cookbooks.
I've done work for publishers such as Annick Press, Appetite by Random House, ECW Press, Emond Publishing, and Penguin Canada; independent authors; and non-profit organizations such as Rainbow Railroad and the HIV Legal Network.
What my clients have said:
"Adrineh is that rare type of editor who will consistently treat your writing as if it were her own. She’s detailed and methodical in her approach, incredibly talented at finding concise ways to convey complex ideas, and always prepared with suggestions for improving flow. I’ve relied on Adrineh for more than copy editing: she provided strong, bespoke critical analyses to help develop new ideas within my texts, and refine structure for optimum reader impact." (Roojin Habibi, lawyer and consultant in global health and human rights)
"She is committed to continuously updating her skill set, and I am happy to continue recommending her to anyone looking for editing and/or indexing work." (Lena Tashjian, author, The Vegan Armenian Kitchen Cookbook)
"Adrineh’s careful work and outstanding attention to detail elevates every book she works on." (Shannon Parr, editorial co-ordinator, ECW Press)
"You won’t find a more dedicated editor than Adrineh; we were truly lucky to have her." (Catherine Dorton, co-chair, Editors Toronto)
I’m available for opportunities in writing, copy editing, and proofreading. Whether you need help with a book, a report, or a website, I will provide a polished, professional finish, fit for purpose and compelling to read. I understand the demands of working in an environment with competing deadlines and can offer a calm head, efficient manner, flexible attitude, and, when you need it, a quick turnaround.
