Profile

Editing is an intensive effort to help a writer bring their insights and perspectives with clarity before a reading audience. As such, I strive to clarify meaning, eliminate verbosity and retain the author’s voice. When necessary, I perform structural editing as well as copy editing and stylistic editing. I enjoy working with new writers eager to hone their craft.

For 35 years, I have edited and written for newspapers, periodicals and, more recently, books. I have been a copy editor or editor-in-chief with The Edmonton Journal, Winnipeg Sun, Inner City Voice (Winnipeg), Living with Christ (Toronto) and the Western Catholic Reporter (Edmonton). I was also a political reporter (Legislature and City Hall) with The Red Deer Advocate and Winnipeg Sun. My freelance articles have appeared in several publications and I currently write a regular column in The Catholic Register (Toronto).

I have served a two-year term as president of the Canadian Church Press and am a member of the Publications Board of Novalis Books.

My work has won dozens of awards from the Canadian Church Press as well as these special achievement awards:

Leslie K. Tarr Award (2018) for lifetime achievement in Canadian Christian publishing and writing. Presented by The Word Guild and Crossroads Christian Communications.

Kevin Carr Christian Leadership Award (2015) for fostering and promoting Christian culture in western and northern Canada. Presented by Newman Theological College, Edmonton.

Outstanding Inner-City Citizen of the Year (1988) for raising the voices and concerns of residents of Winnipeg’s inner city. Presented by the Community Education and Development Association.

I am in good health and am physically active through walking, yoga, weight training, gardening, hiking, curling and cross-country skiing.
