Clarity is king. Editing is more than checking for spelling mistakes and some awkward wording here and there. It's also about making a clear argument with the evidence to support it. Of course, if you really just want to hire me to proofread your text, I can do that, but consider adding me (or another editor) to the mix well before that.
I have a B.A. in history and religious studies, and an editing certificate from Simon Fraser University. My interests are wide-ranging, from Python (the troupe or programming language) to shamanism (book knowledge only), so if you think your manuscript (planned or completed) is outside my field of interest, you might still want to check with me.
I've been editing for around twenty years, mainly in academic-related fields. I'm probably not your best choice for fiction (unless you want your novel vigorously streamlined) or drama. I'm probably better at, and more interested in, helping you develop and package the facts and opinions that are important to you.
Editing is a collaborative process, not just between you and me, but also with the audience you have in mind. An editor isn't just working for the writer, but also should serve as an advocate for the reader.
I can't claim decades of experience in this industry or that, so if you need insider tips I'm not your guy. But if you need an editor who's passionate about clarity (and who's willing to start a sentence with a preposition if that's what the audience needs), then let's have a chat.
