Are you ready to take the next step along your writing journey? I am a specialist literary fiction editor who helps independent and self-publishing authors prepare their books for market.
I share your passion for the written word … especially when they weave stories of magical realism and urban fantasy. Whether a beginning writer or seasoned author, I ensure your work is not only error-free but engaging to readers.
How can I help? Maybe you are struggling with a late draft and looking for some guidance, or know your prose needs smoothing. Perhaps your grammar needs refining to reflect industry standards.
I’ll work carefully through your manuscript, attending to dialogue, narrative, and everything in between. Let me do the nitty gritty so you can concentrate on what you enjoy best—telling stories.
Services offered include proofreading, full and mini line and copy edits, and manuscript evaluations. I am happy to say that in April of 2017 I received notice I had earned my proofreading certification through Editors Canada.
As an editor, my goal is to bring out the best in my client’s work, always respecting an individual’s voice and style. Throughout my career, I have developed a reputation as reliable and self-directed with a sharp eye for detail. My past experiences include editing novels for self-publishing and independent authors, as well as plays and short stories.
I graduated from Trent University with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in English Literature & Language, with a minor in History. From there, it was a natural transition into the world of publishing and I got my feet wet as an editorial assistant for an academic publisher. In 2009 I pursued a certificate in Creative Book Publishing from Humber College, and have since worked for numerous publishers and authors.
My experience has given me familiarity with the publishing process, as well as with editing best practices, grammar, copy editing and proofreading marks, and on-screen editing with Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat. Not one to rest on my laurels, I continually seek new learning opportunities through various courses, seminars, and webinars.
What else should you know about me?
Well, reading and writing have been my lifelong passions, and I spent my childhood devouring, creating, and acting out stories. The best part is that I still get to do so as an adult!
When not working with clients, I enjoy reading (especially literary fiction), writing, painting, going on long runs with my dog, and spending time with family and friends.
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of filling my days as I've always dreamed: immersed in words and stories.
"Jennifer is a consistent and detailed editor. She is a consummate professional and communicates well with authors and publishers alike. Her queries to authors are considered and well-formed, and she picks up on changes a less-experienced editor would overlook. Jennifer is the first person I call when I'm in need of freelance editorial work." - Blake Sproule, Editor at Playwrights Canada Press
"I really appreciated the fact that Jennifer communicated with me! I felt she constantly gave me the feedback I needed, that challenged me, and that has definitely helped my writing!" - Rob Russell, Writer
