Profile

Editor and project consultant with 20 years of experience

I am a highly skilled editor and project consultant with more than 20 years of experience. In regard to editing, my greatest strengths are in writing and editing proposals and reports, as well editing non-fiction and academic texts, whether journal articles or full-length book manuscripts.

My specialization is stylistic, substantive and structural editing, although I also have experience in copy editing and proofreading. Similarly, I have extensive experience in project planning, primarily in the cultural sector.

My project consulting includes writing strategic and project plans, proposals, timelines, budgets and reports.

My editing background

I have been editing since 1997 when I first began work in the publishing industry. I have worked in literary publishing, magazine publishing, book publishing and scholarly publishing. I continued editing work throughout my Master of Publishing degree and my PhD in Education.

My experience in the publishing industry and my Master of Publishing degree lend valuable and unique strengths to my editing work. I work with authors/clients to ensure that each text is carefully edited with the target readership in mind, to clearly communicate and to engage the reader.

Similarly, my PhD (and experience as an author of peer-reviewed publications) and my work in scholarly publishing have made me a highly skilled editor of non-fiction and scholarly writing. I understand well the critical eye that academic readers bring to a text. Lastly, my own academic work in the field of rhetoric and discourse theory has provided me with a deep appreciation and aptitude for what can be accomplished by a text written and edited with care.

My project consulting background

I have led the development of project plans and proposals since 2001. This has included strategic and project plans, funding proposals, timelines, budgets and project reports. My focus has been on organizations in the not-for-profit sector. I am also available to give workshops in these areas.

Endorsements

"I have employed Johanne’s careful eye, finely tuned ear, and well-informed sensibility on the editing of a recent book and ended up with a far better work as a result of the care and conscientiousness that she brought to it, and with all due speed and a strong service ethos."

-- John Willinsky, Khosla Family Professor, Stanford University

"I heartily recommend Johanne's editing. It is crisp, creative, and constructive. She has an ear for academic writing -- the best kind -- and has helped me improve my writing immensely."

-- Professor Richard Smith, Director, Masters of Digital Media Program (Joint Program of UBC, SFU, ECUAD and BCIT)

"In my role as CEO of Magazines Canada (2000-2016) I worked with Johanne on a number of pan-Canadian publishing projects. Her ability to not only create but also to manage funding applications, engage in related consultations and meet deadlines proved consistently fruitful for the collaborating organizations we both served."

-- Mark Jamison, President, Envericom Consulting Ltd.
