Profile

Whenever I tackle a new project, I aim to climb inside a text to consider its workings from the inside out. My sense is that this perspective helps to reveal what the text may be calling for. Clear, authentic communication governs my commitment to clients, who range from book publishers to professional associations to art galleries to individuals. Powerful, moving narratives inform my purpose as an editor of diverse genres for such clients as the Gardiner Museum, Goose Lane Editions, McGill-Queen's University Press, Nimbus Publishing, Pearson, and Propriometrics Press. A fascination with the relationships between writing and imagination, language and revelation brought me to editing. Love for the work and growth through the work have kept me at it for almost twenty-five years. I offer a thorough, accurate, organized, and resourceful approach to forge congenial relationships and to meet deadlines. My diverse portfolio is testament to my adaptability and versatility in working with authors, designers, and production and managing editors. I appreciate the fine balance between adherence to rules and the integrity of authorial intention for specific audiences.

Here's what others have said:

Paula Sarson is invaluable to the editorial success of Nimbus Publishing and Vagrant Press. Having worked with Paula directly during the four years I served as Nimbus’s in-house editor, and now as managing editor, I can say without hesitation that she is a consummate professional, always meets her deadlines—even under short notice—and consistently delivers excellent work, both in copyediting and proofreading. Her knowledge of grammar and punctuation, sentence and paragraph construction, and her rigorous attention to detail make her the ideal close reader. Furthermore, she has a gift for communicating her editorial decisions that extends to both editors and authors. She delivers such information with tact and courtesy, and has gained the respect of the industry. She would be indispensable to any organization lucky enough to have her as a copyeditor and proofreader.

"Paula is a rigorous, precise, and thoughtful editor who meets every deadline and exceeds every hope. I rely on her invaluable contributions."
Penelope Jackson, Managing Editor, Propriometrics Press

"Paula Sarson is among the finest editors I’ve had the pleasure of working with. In my four years as production editor at Goose Lane Editions, Paula was a consistently reliable resource, never missing a deadline, and equally sensitive to authors’ intentions and the publisher’s needs. She is a rigorous copyeditor and proofreader, possessing an easy familiarity with current style guides and an unerring eye for detail. As important as her technical skill is Paula’s ability to win and maintain an author’s trust and put them at ease through the copyediting process. I would not hesitate to recommend her services to any author or publisher."
