Let me help you make your writing the best that it can be – on time and on budget.
I am a professional editor and proofreader with ten years of editing experience, seven of those as a parliamentary editor at the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick. In addition to transcribing, editing, and checking Hansard and legislative committee debate transcripts, I have worked on fiction, non-fiction, recipes, and poetry. And as the inaugural chief sub-editor of The Maritime Edit magazine, I created the house style guide.
Before beginning my editing career, I taught ESL – English grammar and writing to international undergraduate students and to Francophone military personnel.
I have Government of Canada Secret, or Level II, security clearance.
Since starting my business in 2016, I have taken more than two dozen courses, workshops, and webinars on proofreading and different kinds of editing: copy, stylistic (line), and structural (developmental). (Please see Editors Canada's definitions here, or ask me for clarification.) I would also be happy to do a manuscript analysis for you. My skills are sharp and current.
New writers are welcome, as are all inquiries. I look forward to hearing from you.
What clients have said about my work:
Just do what you can with it and polish it and make it all lovely – in other words, give it the special Shelley treatment! (magazine editor-in-chief)
Absolutely bloody brilliant as ever. Thank you, Shelley! (magazine editor-in-chief)
The author really likes your reworking of the back cover copy – good job! He also was really impressed with the author queries I forwarded to him – the language issues (French and Italian) and the baseball one in particular. (publisher)
Thanks, Shelley. The final book owes much to your rigorous proofreading. (managing editor)
Many thanks for the info. I'll be looking at the sites you've listed, as well as your suggestions, in the next few days. Your suggestions are extremely helpful, and you're a very good coach! (fiction writer)
