Profile

Book Magic has twenty years' experience editing fiction from thrillers to mysteries to children's books to sci-fi and fantasy to romance and erotica. We also copy edit nonfiction manuscripts such as inspirational material, memoirs, and business guidebooks. Book Magic provides comprehensive copy editing, book coaching, rewriting, and manuscript evaluation packages to take care of all your needs. As the owner of the company, I've edited more than 250 full-length books as well as short stories, business reports, book proposals, cover letters, CVs, essays, newsletters and articles, and my staff has edited countless more. I've written three books including Be Your Own Editor, and I used to do biweekly writing tips for Freelance Zone.com.

Moreover, I've worked with five international publishing companies and am currently associated with a publishing house in Ontario. My clients consist of first-time writers as well as seasoned pros, people whose native tongue is English and those who have English as a second language, the able-bodied and those with visual impairments or other disabilities that make writing more challenging. Being part of the process that enables writers to hold their first book in their hands, or to see their masterpieces on Amazon, gives me tremendous satisfaction.

I've spent 29 years living in Ottawa, Ontario, and another five in Toronto, so I am conversant with Canadian spelling, but because I grew up in New Joisey, as Tony Soprano would say, American spelling is my default. I am also familiar with British and Australian spelling and dialects. Generally, I use The Chicago Manual of Style, but if that's not to your liking, I can edit fiction or nonfiction according to your preference.

My team members include experienced editors, editorial assistants, manuscript formatters, and cover design artists across North America. I can also connect you with experts in the self-publishing field who can guide you through that process should you decide to publish yourself.

The comprehensive copy-editing service involves rectifying errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and typos, as well as standardization (e.g., making sure that if you spell okay as such at one point in your document, you don't spell it as OK later on) and stylizing punctuation. Copy editing also addresses awkward sentence structure, wordiness, lack of clarity, and redundancies in the manuscript. 1.5 cents per word

Last, Book Magic provides manuscript evaluations. Many clients find this helpful when they reach a dead end and don't know what's wrong with their work. We point out areas of strength and weakness in plot, character development, setting, and dialogue for fiction and any problems with structure, flow, clarity, and references for nonfiction. Then we make specific recommendations for change so as to make the material more readable and marketable. 1.5 cents per word

Because many of us at Book Magic are writers, we understand how nerve-racking it can be to hand your material over to a stranger; consequently, we strive to be constructive and helpful. Whether you need major reconstruction or minor surgery on your manuscript, we can polish your prose.
