Primary contact:

I'm an editor and proofreader specializing in non-fiction materials -- mainly academic, government, and business. I aim for text that is clear, concise, and understandable, even to readers who aren't well acquainted with the subject matter. Most of my experience is in copy editing, but my excellent analytical and organizational skills also serve me well when performing stylistic and structural editing. I work well with authors and other contributors, respecting their knowledge of the subject matter, while doing my best to gently persuade them of my point of view, when necessary. I'm a stickler for consistency and follow a client's style guidelines faithfully or compile my own. I am very familiar with Microsoft Word's Track Changes function and Adobe Acrobat's markup tools.

Besides my work, my interests include culture and the arts, gardening, family history, and travel.

Before starting my own business in 2001, I'd worked as a copy editor with an educational publisher, production editor with a trade publisher, and technical writer and editor for various software firms. I have an MA in German Literature, so I read, write, and speak German (no longer fluently, but still fairly well), and I have a working knowledge of French.

Here are a few comments from clients about projects we've worked on together.

From the manager of a project to update and provide additional content for an institution’s website: “Stephanie Stone is one of those rare individuals who is not only an expert at writing and editing but is also a person open to new ideas, capable of listening and giving precise feedback.”

From the in-house editor of an e-book on the Windows operating system: “Thank you for your help with this project, Stephanie. You've been amazing to work with, and I appreciate your patience and your attention to detail (and your sense of humour!).”

From the authors of a book to be published by an academic press: “We are very grateful for the edits you made and the close reading you gave to the manuscript. We appreciate all that you have done. We have added your name to the acknowledgements.” [This appeared as] “We benefited from the remarkable copy editing work of Stephanie Stone.”
