Editor specializing in fiction and in education, especially English language teaching. Over 30 years' experience working with international writers and educational publishers. Published author, Teacher and Trainer in ELT (English Language Teaching), Master of Education in English Language Teaching.
My background
I was born in the UK and have lived in Canada since 2004. I have dual nationality.
For the past 20 + years, I have run my own business as ELT consultant, teacher educator and author. My educational consultancy group, Sue Leather Associates ( www.sueleatherassociates.com ) specialises in teacher and trainer education, teacher’s professional development, and in the management of international ELT projects. My international experience covers Central and South Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, North Africa, North and South America. I have worked in almost 60 countries.
In support of my academic work, I have authored a number of books. Here is a selection of them:
- Author (with Jez Uden) Extensive Reading: The Role of Motivation, Routledge 2021
- Author of 35 graded readers for Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Mary Glasgow, Penguin, and Cengage/National Geographic.
- Author of the Footprint Reading Library, a series of 100 non-fiction readers, grouped into five themes: Incredible Animals, Fascinating Places, Remarkable People, Exciting Activities, Amazing Science
- Writer, re-versioning the coursebook Edge for Abu Dhabi Education Council, Cengage UK 2017
- How to Write Graded Readers ELT Teacher 2 Writer , 2013

My work
My work falls into two categories:
- Work with publishers on fiction
I am an expert author of learner literature and have written some 35 original novels for academic publishers such as Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Penguin and National Geographic Learning. I twice won the Extensive Reading Foundation ‘s Learner Literature Award.
I was Joint Series Editor of Cengage/National Geographic’s Page Turners series for which I story edited some 50 books, working with around 25 writers. The series won a number of Learner Literature Awards.

I have extensive experience with publishers of English language teaching (ELT) materials. I am experienced in developmental editing, copy editing, proofreading, and British/North American localization. My clients have included the British Council, Cambridge University Press, National Geographic, Oxford University Press and Scholastic.
I am on the Editorial Panel of the ELT Journal.
