I've been a writer and editor for over 15 years—longer, if you count the 136-page novel (handwritten!) I wrote in the sixth grade. I have experience as a novelist, screenwriter, playwright, and blog/article writer. I frequently work as a writing coach for authors wanting a drill sergeant/cheerleader (or a bit of both!) to guide them as they finish their drafts. I'm a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading and the Canadian Authors Association.
From substantive and developmental to stylistic and mechanical, I'm experienced in all forms and genres of editing and proofreading. I’ve edited Amazon best-selling novels, academic work for prestigious journals, business publications, and reports to US Congress.
I love all speculative fiction—fantasy, sci-fi, paranormal, urban, contemporary, dystopian—for both adult and young adult audiences. My favorite stories are ones that value rich characterization; with fantastic characters to work with, all things are possible.
In non-fiction or creative non-fiction, I've worked with self-help and memoir authors who have things to say but aren't certain how best to say them. I especially enjoy working with authors specializing in mental health, women's health, politics, literature, and travel. I've edited blogs, articles, websites, press releases, books, essays, and dissertations/theses.
In 2019, I volunteered as a writer, editor, and social media manager for Judy Zaichkowsky, the Green Party of Canada candidate in Vancouver South. At present, I am the Communications Chair for the Vancouver South EDA. I'm also a volunteer with the Editors BC/Vancouver Public Library Blue Pencil program.
I once heard Margaret Atwood speak. She talked about how her mother told her if she wanted to be a writer, she'd better improve her spelling and punctuation. Without missing a beat, young Margaret Atwood replied, "No, Mom. I'll have editors for that."
As a coach and developmental editor, I help authors unlock the best version of the stories they are trying to tell. I focus on the most important aspects of a story—plot, characterization, theme, and readability—to deliver useful, relevant critique and suggestions without overwhelming or frightening the author. Authors, I've been where you are. I know how hard it is to trust a stranger with your baby.
Luckily, I'm really great with kids.
