1. CONTEST NEWS: Carole Saint-Père wins free EAC membership

Congratulations to QAC branch member Carole Saint-Père, the latest winner of EAC’s free membership raffle.

“What good news!” exclaimed Carole. “I’m so happy! Thank you to the organizing members and especially the lucky hand that drew my name!”

Want to win a year’s free membership in EAC? There is just one more chance to win!

How do I enter the raffle?

Make sure you’re listed in EAC’s Membership List. That’s it! On May 10, the national office will draw one final winner from the Membership List. The winner will receive one year’s free membership in the association.

Not listed? Visit the Membership List FAQ for step-by-step instructions.

Remember: There is no cost for members to activate their profiles or to search the Membership List. The Membership List is only accessible to EAC members, not to the public.

Final draw date: May 10, 2010.

Visit the Members’ Area for complete contest details.

2. CERTIFICATION: EAC congratulates new certified editors

The report to members on the 2009 certification test administration is now available on Interactive Voice.

This year we are especially pleased to announce that ten more candidates have passed all four tests required to earn the Certified Professional Editor (CPE) credential, and that more than 100 credentials have now been awarded—proof that EAC Certification is allowing editors to demonstrate their excellent editing knowledge, skills and experience.

New designations awarded in 2010:

  • 10 Certified Proofreaders
  • 1*  Certified Copy Editor
  • 24 Certified Structural and Stylistic Editors
  • 10 Certified Professional Editors

* This test was not offered in 2009; the credential was earned by a candidate who completed the Elementary Knowledge test in this cycle after passing the Copy Editing test in 2008.

A media release will be issued in the coming weeks. Congratulations to all participants in EAC’s 2009 administration of certification tests!

3. CONFERENCE 2010: New sessions announced

Meet up with your colleagues from across Canada again or for the first time! Attend EAC’s Conference 2010, Reflections: Editing Content and Culture, from May 28 to 30 in Montreal.

We have added the following new English and French sessions, as well as more sessions that will be simultaneously interpreted into French.

The Road to the 2010 Winter Games: An Editor’s Perspective—Andrew Tzembelicos

Beyond the sports, athletes, medals and ceremonies were editorial services and publications— fundamental elements in staging any Games. Andrew Tzembelicos, the manager responsible for these areas with the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, will be on hand to discuss what’s entailed in reviewing copy for an organizing committee and delivering a publications program.

The Changing Landscape of Professional Insurance—Don Miller & Oran Boyle

EAC has come up with an extensive suite of top-notch, group-discounted insurance products. This session will address the need for professional liability coverage in our changing marketplace, general liability insurance and how it can increase your billing rate, and more.

Visit www.editors.ca/conference/conference2010 for more information, including the latest on education sessions, networking events and speakers! And be sure to check out the schedule, as some session times have changed.

4. WEBSITE: Migration project complete

Between March 26 and March 29, the email forums, @editors.ca and @reviseurs.ca email addresses, association website and an upgraded Interactive Voice were successfully migrated to EAC’s own dedicated, self-managed server. This migration gives EAC more control over these web products and the freedom to make improvements as necessary. EAC also benefits from long-term cost savings by bringing management of these services in-house.

We’re pleased to report this migration was completed ahead of schedule and on budget. We thank EAC members for their patience during the maintenance window and gratefully acknowledge the skill, dedication and cooperation of eSubnet Enterprises and Invisible Threads for their hard work on this enormous project.

If you spot any problems or if you have any questions about EAC’s web services, contact the national office.

5. MEMBER NEWS: A round of applause!

BC branch member Georgina Montgomery recently collaborated with photographer Kevin Oke to write her first coffee table book. The Cowichan was published in October 2009 by Harbour Publishing as the latest in a series of titles showcasing British Columbia’s special regions.

Saskatchewan branch member Don Ward was the first-prize winner in the short story category in CBC’s 2009 Literary Awards. His story, “Badger,” is about a priest who develops a relationship with a badger with whom he discusses philosophical and other matters. The story will be published in enRoute magazine and carries a $6,000 prize.

Two books edited by Toronto branch member Rosemary Shipton have recently been recognized: John English’s Just Watch Me: The Life of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Volume Two: 1968–2000 won the $25,000 Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing; and David Hackett Fischer’s Champlain’s Dream: The Visionary Adventurer Who Made a New World in Canada was one of three finalists for the $75,000 2009 Cundill International Prize in History.

Member news is a new component of the EAC website and is designed to not only applaud EAC members’ successes but also let visitors to the website know that EAC members win awards, publish books and make their mark on the communications world in other important ways.

If you have member news to share, contact member news coordinator, Marguerite Watson.

6. MARKETING & PR: Corporate membership survey

Members who work in-house are invited to complete an online survey designed by students of Humber College’s Market Research for Public Relations course. The students are working with EAC’s national Marketing and Public Relations Committee to explore offering corporate association membership to better serve the needs of in-house editors and build a solid foundation for sponsorship.

Take the survey now:
www.surveymonkey.com/s/eacresearch

The survey will be open until Wednesday, April 21.

Please note: Because this survey was designed by the Humber College students, it cannot be revised by national office staff. Please do not contact the national office for survey support.

7. PODCASTS: “Accounting for Editors, HST Included” now available
