1. CALL FOR CANDIDATES

Two important positions are now available at the national level of EAC due to recent resignations. The national executive council is seeking nominations of members to serve as either member-at-large (responsible for member services and a number of communication committees) on the executive council or as chair of the Training and Development Committee. Successful candidates will be appointed by the national executive council to serve until the annual general meeting in June 2008. Self-nominations are welcome.

The member-at-large has the general responsibilities of a council member, represents the association membership and provides a voice on the council for specific national-level committees of the association. Candidates must be voting members of the association in good standing.

The Training and Development Committee oversees policy and programs for training and professional development at the national level of EAC. The committee investigates new options for programming and delivery, makes recommendations and initiates program development.

Further details on both positions are available from the association’s past president and Nominating Committee chair, Maureen Nicholson, or from
<www.editors.ca/members/getinvolved/volunteer_resources/council_committees.html>.

If you would like to be considered as a candidate, please email <nominations@editors.ca> by January 7, 2008. Provide a brief statement of interest and a biographical note, including your prior experience in EAC executive positions or committee work.

2. PROMOTE YOURSELF: Member website logo now available

The national executive council is pleased to announce that EAC members may now promote their professional affiliation with the association on their business or personal websites with a specially designed logo. The member website logo is similar to the association logo and identifies the user as a current EAC member. Please refer to the Member website logo guidelines for more information on appropriate use and to acquire the member website logo files.

The association acknowledges the efforts of Kelly Parry, 2006–07 chair of the Marketing and Public Relations Committee, in carrying through with this initiative.

3. REMINDER: Submit your nomination for the Tom Fairley Award

Do you know an editor who’s made an outstanding contribution to a work published in Canada in English or French during the 2007 calendar year? If so, now’s the time to nominate that person for the Editors’ Association of Canada’s 2007 Tom Fairley Award for Editorial Excellence.

A $2,000 cash prize accompanies the 2007 Tom Fairley Award, which will be presented at the banquet at EAC’s conference in Edmonton on June 7, 2008.

Deadlines
1. Friday, January 11, 2008, for the letter of nomination
2. Friday, January 25, 2008, for the supporting documentation and administration fee

Self-nominations are encouraged.

For complete nomination instructions and other information about the award, see <www.editors.ca/tomfairley/>.

4. IS YOUR BUSINESS GOING OVERSEAS? Speak out

At the September 2007 meeting of the national executive council, some concern was raised about the possibility, and indeed the practice, of publishers and other clients outsourcing editorial jobs to providers across borders and overseas. Are you an editor who has experienced a loss of business to non-Canadian editors? Do you do business with clients based outside Canada? Are you an employer who makes use of non-Canadian editorial service providers? The national executive council wants to hear from you. Vice-president Brendan Wild invites you to participate in the discussion on the Interactive Voice forum. All comments and observations are welcome.
