1. TOM FAIRLEY AWARD: Submit your nomination
Do you know an editor who’s made an outstanding contribution to a work published in Canada in English or French during the 2008 calendar year? If so, now’s the time to nominate that person for the 2008 Tom Fairley Award for Editorial Excellence.
This award, which is accompanied by a $2,000 cash prize, recognizes the editor’s often invisible contribution to written communication. The award will be presented at the banquet of EAC’s 30th anniversary conference in Toronto on June 6, 2009.
Deadlines:
1. Friday, January 16, 2009, for the letter of nomination
2. Friday, January 30, 2009, for the supporting documentation and administration fee
Self-nominations are encouraged.

2. CONFERENCE 2009: Update
Conference 2009 Needs Your Embarrassing Pictures
The opening reception of “Celebrating the Past, Charting the Future: The 30th Anniversary Conference” will be a celebration of our history, and what better way to relive the past 30 years than through pictures? If you have photos or other memorabilia from EAC’s past, particularly the early years, please contact Mary Allen. Photos can be hard copies or in digital format. These treasures will be displayed at the reception on Friday, June 5.
Early-bird conference registration opens on February 23. You will be able to register online or by mail or fax (the form will be available on our website). Registration for MagNet, Canada’s premiere conference for the magazine publishing industry, also opens on February 23, and EAC members are eligible for MagNet member rates. MagNet will be held June 2 to 5 at the same location as the EAC conference, 89 Chestnut.
For those travelling to Toronto for the conference, we ask that you consider measures to reduce your carbon footprint. You can do this by buying carbon credits from Planetair. Visit Planetair’s website for more information on this green initiative.
On-site Volunteer Coordinator Required for Conference 2009
The Conference Committee is looking for an On-site Volunteer Coordinator. This position will be lots of fun for someone who enjoys teaching and working with others. It involves compiling contact lists of volunteers, preparing schedules, and managing and instructing volunteers at the conference. The volunteers will register attendees, introduce presenters, and run errands, among other tasks. The volunteer coordinator must be well organized and available by email or phone during the day. If you are interested in this volunteer position, please contact John Green.
3. PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS: Watch for new PES
In two weeks, EAC members will have a chance to review and comment on the revised draft of Professional Editorial Standards (PES) before the vote on ratification later this spring. The revised standards, compiled over the past two years by EAC’s Professional Standards Committee, are the product of extensive research, input from editors within and outside EAC and expert reviews at several levels. You should receive the revised standards plus review instructions by email by January 30.

4. KUDOS: Active Voice cover to appear in editing textbook
Congratulations to Saskatoon member Michelle Boulton whose design work for Active Voice has made Nelson Education sit up and take notice. Michelle’s cover for the Spring 2008 edition of Active Voice will appear in an editing textbook for college and university courses in Canada. The cover will appear in a chapter about design and layout in a section about newsletters. Great work, Michelle!
5. WEBSITE: New events calendar now online
Find out at a glance what’s happening at all the branches, or quickly check the dates for important association activities. Visit EAC’s new Events Calendar! Using the power of Google Apps, each branch creates its own Google Calendar of Events, and the combination is displayed on our site. Viva la collaboration! www.editors.caVolunteers
The initiation stage of the website improvement project has begun. Planning and execution stages will begin soon. Volunteers are still needed. Please help out if you can. Contact Ken Weinberg, Chair, Website Committee.
6. NATIONAL OFFICE: Electronic renewal notices and receipts
In an effort to reduce costs and cut down on the amount of paper EAC uses, the national office no longer issues membership renewal notices and receipts by Canada Post.
Members receive receipts and renewal notices, as well as a letter confirming their membership in the association (which replaces the membership card), by email when they renew. Please remember to check your email as your renewal date approaches to ensure your membership stays valid.

7. STAFF NEWS: Changes in the national office
We’re pleased to announce that Michelle Ou has been promoted to the role of communications manager. Michelle and executive director Carolyn L Burke have brought much of the work on EAC’s national marketing in-house to better plan and implement these initiatives within the office’s new annual cycle. Michelle’s new responsibilities will include coordinating EAC’s marketing, public relations and communications.
