1. CERTIFICATION: Registration opens this month
Following record registration in 2008, and hot on the heels of awarding the first Certified Professional Editor designations at the 30th anniversary conference in June, EAC will open registration for the 2009 certification tests this month.
Wondering what it’s all about? Seeking official recognition of your high level of knowledge and skill? Want an editor’s marketing advantage? Check out thecertification website for all of the information you’re looking for. The national office will send an email announcement when registration opens later this month, so keep an eye on your inbox.
Remember: As an EAC member, you’ll benefit from discounted pricing on the certification tests—plus extra savings if you register for more than one test.
Study early!
To assess your readiness and see what the tests entail, check out EAC Certification: Study Guide and Exemplars. Each volume of the Study Guide provides you with a comprehensive introduction to one of the certification tests, including a practice test, an answer key and sample results of a pass and a failure, with markers’ comments. Working through the relevant volumes of the Study Guide is a hands-on way to engage with the standards and identify gaps in your current knowledge and skills.

2. CONFERENCE 2010: Be part of the excitement!
The 2010 Conference Committee needs YOU! We are presently recruiting volunteers to help organize the EAC 2010 conference to be held next June in Montreal, and are looking to fill four key positions that don’t require Montreal residency:
- Presenter Coordinators (one English-speaking and one French-speaking)
- Communications and Promotions Officer (Either English- or French-speaking)
- Conference Translator (English to French)
- Conference Webmaster
These positions need to be filled immediately.
You will be helping a dynamic team create a conference experience that EAC members will be talking about for a long time to come. And don’t forget the many benefits of volunteerism: developing and honing skills, national recognition for taking an active role in your association, networking, meeting and working with colleagues from across Canada and a satisfying sense of achievement.

3. GET INVOLVED: EAC representatives wanted
Interested in helping EAC develop, foster and coordinate relationships with other organizations? We’re looking for representatives to take part in various committees and boards on EAC’s behalf:
- An Ottawa-area member to represent EAC on the Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA)
The Canadian Conference of the Arts is the national forum for the arts and cultural community in Canada. It provides research, analysis and consultations on public policies affecting the arts and the Canadian cultural institutions and industries. The CCA fosters informed public debate on policy issues and seeks to advance the cultural rights of Canadians. www.ccarts.ca - A Toronto-area member to represent EAC on the MagNet organizing committee
MagNet is Magazines Canada’s public policy, professional development and networking conference for magazine professionals. www.magazinescanada.ca/magnet

4. TOM FAIRLEY AWARD: Endowment fund drive
EAC is launching a drive to boost the endowment fund for the Tom Fairley Award for Editorial Excellence. We’re looking for corporate funding, so if you, or someone you know, works in-house or with a Canadian publishing company, please contact EAC executive director Carolyn L Burke.
5. FIND WORK: National Job Board
Jobs can be scarce during tough economic times. EAC is happy to provide the National Job Board as a free service for members. Employers from across the country publicize their job opportunities through EAC. Be sure to check the board often!

6. RESOURCES: CHRC releases the second edition of The Art of Managing Your Career
The 2009 edition of The Art of Managing Your Career is now available through the Cultural Human Resources Council website. The Art of Managing Your Career is a resource guide for self-employed artists and cultural workers in live performing arts; writing and publishing; visual arts and craft; film, television and broadcasting; digital media; music and sound recording; and heritage.
The second edition includes new examples, links to useful websites and up-to-date information for the financial and technology sections.
The Art of Managing Your Career was developed by artists and cultural workers to provide emerging self-employed artists and cultural workers with pertinent and practical information to better manage their careers.
7. COPYRIGHT CONSULTATION: Announcement notice
On Monday, July 20, the federal government launched a nationwide consultation to solicit Canadians’ opinions on the important issue of copyright reform.
The Government of Canada has committed to modernizing Canada’s copyright laws, to provide meaningful rights for creators and promote the use of digital technology by its citizens. In fall 2009, the government plans to deliver new legislation “that is forward-looking, reflects Canadian values and strengthens Canada’s ability to compete in the global digital economy.”
