#EditorsChat 1: Certification Q&A and Study Tips chat

Certification Q&A and Study Tips (#EditorsChat / #ReviseursCauserie 1)

We hosted our first-ever Twitter chat on Tuesday, October 6. The topic? Editors' Association of Canada (Editors Canada) Certification. Here's how it went.

  1.

  2.
We were excited (and a little nervous) before things got under way. It sounded like quite a number of editors on Twitter were keen for our first #EditorsChat / #ReviseursCauserie, too.
  3.
Yay, @editorscanada is having their first Twitter chat 6 Oct at 2pm EDT, on #certification Q&A and Study Tips. Follow #EditorsChat.

  4.
Going to check out @editorscanada's #EditorsChat today about editing and certification!

  5.
Looking forward to my first tweet chat with Editors Canada! #editorschat

  6.
All prepped for the first Editors Canada chat! #editorschat

  7.

  8.
And then we kicked things off!
  9.
Eep. It's happening! Welcome to our first #EditorsChat! How is everyone doing today?

  10.
  11.
  12.
I'm doing great! Thanks for hosting this chat. #editorschat

  13.
@CobwebText Great to hear! Hope we all have fun today. And learn. Learning is good too. #EditorsChat

  14.
  15.
Thank you for joining us for #EditorsChat. (And thanks in advance for your patience as we figure this out! We're learning as we go.)

  16.
…et merci pour votre patience pendant que nous apprenons à organiser une séance de clavardage sur Twitter #ReviseursCauserie

  17.
  18.
  19.
  20.

  21.
We introduced our wonderful guest speakers...
  22.
  23.
.@Anne_Brennan & @jeannemckane are co-chairs of our certification steering committee. Ask Anne & Jeanne all about the program. #EditorsChat

  24.
.@jennygovier is a Certified Copy Editor & Certified Proofreader. Ask her about becoming certified & life after certification. #EditorsChat

  25.
  26.
  27.
Nous prenons vos questions sur le programme« certification » #ReviseursCauserie

  28.
Looking forward to hearing all your questions about #certtification in today's #EditorsChat, on now and for the next hour!

  29.

  30.
...and the form we envisioned the #EditorsChat taking.
  31.
We'll take your #EditorsChat questions about certification for editors and retweet them in sequence (e.g., Q1, Q2) as the chat progresses.

  32.
We also received some questions for #EditorsChat in advance. (Hello to everyone who's listening in but not tweeting today!)

  33.
Please numerically tag your #EditorsChat response to the question you're answering (e.g., Preface your tweet "A1" if you respond to Q1)

  34.
Tagging your response to specific questions will make it easier to follow along with the conversation. #EditorsChat

  35.

  36.
Finally, it was time to let the questions fly.
  37.
All set? Let's get started then! Have questions about certification for editors? Our experts have the answers. Ask away! #EditorsChat

  38.
Q1 I am considering certification: how have you found the reception? Are there many/any employers who specifically seek it? #editorschat

  39.
A1 More and more employers are asking for #EditorsCanada #certification. And those who don't ask for it are impressed by it. #editorschat

  40.
.@Anne_Brennan thanks, that is really helpful. I worked at a university and recall talk about requiring EC cert for new hires. #editorschat

  41.
A1 Not sure about employers myself, but many potential clients have mentioned it as a reason for contacting me. #EditorsChat

  42.
If potential clients/employers don't know about #EditorsCanada #certification, they're always interested to hear about it. #editorschat

  43.
I don't think certification should be required (by emp.). There are many qualified and excellent editors who don't have it. #editorschat

  44.
Editing tests are a fair way for employers to hire editors. Also look at their cvs and work samples. #EditorsChat

  45.
A1 .@MichaelHelfield I agree, though right now it's hard for clients to assess editors skill - certification makes it easier. #editorschat

  46.
Just for the record, the Certified Editors I have met all top-notch editors, excellent resources. The test will ensure quality #editorschat

  47.
A1. I haven't taken the certification test yet, but as a freelancer, I'm interested in it as a credential. #EditorsChat

  48.

  49.
Q2 @jennygovier Are you getting more work now that you're certified? #EditorsChat

  50.
A2 More people contact me, so I've been able to be picky since. May also be due to experience, but many clients cite it. #EditorsChat

  51.

  52.
Q3 Is certification more for editors who work freelance or in-house? #EditorsChat

  53.
Q3 It's for either. The tests are designed to test skills that any editor should have, regardless of where they work. #editorschat

  54.
  55.

  56.
Well hey! Lee d'Anjou, one of the association's founding members and a pioneer of the certification program joined Twitter just to participate in our #EditorsChat!
  57.
@LeedAnjou @editorscanada I may be the happiest editor in Canada right now. Lovely to see Lee d'Anjou in our Twitter chat! #EditorsChat

  58.
  59.

  60.
Q4 Are the study guides only good for certification or can editors who aren't writing the exams use them? #EditorsChat

  61.
@Piglita The study guides are great professional development for any editor, even if s/he never does a #certification test. #EditorsChat

  62.
  63.

  64.
Q5 Can you provide any details about the exams: how long are they, are they on paper or computer, who marks them, etc? #editorschat

  65.
A5 Each test is 3 hours long, on paper. We are working on a switch to computer testing over the next couple of years. #editorschat

  66.
A5 Tests are marked by experienced editors, who use a detailed answer key developed by the test-setters. #editorschat

  67.
A5 @editorscanada Test is marked anonymously by 2 markers with detailed answer key. If they disagree, test goes to 3rd marker. #EditorsChat

  68.
Related to Q5: Do the written tests take into account that editors normally work on-screen? #editorschat

  69.
@DJKrushen Hard to do in a written test, but yes. Sometimes there are questions about managing files and using Comments tool. #EditorsChat

  70.
Q5. @DJKrushen Great question. Moving from screen to paper editing can be daunting...need to brush up on those pen marks. #editorschat

  71.
@StaceyDAtkinson @DJKrushen It's important to practice writing with a pen or pencil for long periods. Not used to that anymore! #editorschat

  72.
@DJKrushen Also, the tests evaluate editorial skill and judgment -- those are the same on paper or onscreen. #editorschat

  73.
@jeannemckane @DJKrushen #Certification tests also measure skill at communicating in writing with authors and managing editors. #editorschat

  74.
@Anne_Brennan @StaceyDAtkinson @DJKrushen You also need to know copy editing markup for that exam. Few of us do now, I think! #editorschat

  75.
Sounds like I'll have to seriously brush up on my copy editing marks! All this information has been really helpful. Thanks! #editorschat

  76.
@jennygovier @StaceyDAtkinson @DJKrushen I still use hand markup when someone hands me a short doc and says, "Check this!" #editorschat

  77.
    @jennygovier @StaceyDAtkinson @DJKrushen I even still have a gig where I'm required to do hand markup . . . believe it or not. #editorschat

  78.
  79.

  80.
  81.
Q6 Def hard. I felt prepared but under pressure-3hrs passes quickly! So I wasn’t confident coming out. But even *I* passed! #EditorsChat

  82.
A6 @jennygovier #EditorsCanada #Certification tests are very hard. Measure mastery, not entry-level skills. Need experience. #editorschat

  83.
#editorschat This is probably in my materials, but what is the threshold for pass/fail in the exams?

  84.
@Indieeditor The passing mark is between 75 and 80%. It's consistent with professional #certification programs in other fields. #EditorsChat

  85.
A6 .@Anne_Brennan I like that they are difficult, because it'll help build confidence that Canadian editors are superb #editorschat

  86.

  87.
    Before we knew it...
  88.
  89.

  90.
But our fellow tweeters left us with some great insights and tips for certification...
  91.
#editorschat A piece of important advice from an Editors' Association of Canada member of long experience: 1/3

  92.
#editorschat Get Meeting Professional Editorial Standards or a Cert. Study Guide & DO the exercises. Don't just read them--DO them. 2/3

  93.
  94.
Tips: study per @LeedAnjou's tweet, especially guides. Know where stuff is in your ref books. Manage time & read instructions #editorschat

  95.
My takeaways: Clear markup, writing under time constraints, and showing your editorial skills and judgment #editorschat

  96.

  97.
...and tips for Twitter and Twitter chats, too.
  98.
Sorry, my last tweet messed up. Suggesting people use Tweetchat service when doing tweet chats. Makes it much easier :) #editorschat

  99.
Tweetchat manages the hashtags and filters for you. MUCH easier.  http://Tweetchat.com  #editorschat

  100.
@CobwebText I'm not aware of Tweetchat, Tamra. You've got me curious! Will look into it. #editorschat

  101.

  102.
And then it was time to say goodbye.
  103.
That's a wrap for our inaugural #EditorsChat. Thanks to everyone who participated during the chat and who sent in questions ahead of time.
