An Introduction to Plain Language Writing

Gael Spivak will introduce you to the basic concepts of plain language writing and editing. She'll show you some techniques that you can use to make the text more logical, clear and useful.

Gael is a writer, editor and communications advisor for the federal government. She works at a science-based regulatory agency where she regularly coaches her colleagues on plain language techniques. She's worked on several different topics while in government, such as food safety and food labelling, animal health, plant health, biotechnology, ethics and government, and pandemic flu.

She's also done numerous volunteer jobs for Editors Canada. In part because it's a great way to network and to gain transferable business skills.

She collects squirrels, tiny books and articles on the singular they.
