Proofreading is the final stage in the editorial process: you’re making sure that all the intended content appears in the final version—in the right place, and in a readable form. You’re also watching for any errors that slipped through the previous stages of editing.
Why is this important? It’s because every error that a reader notices erodes their trust in the document and the organization that produced it. And missing or incorrect content can make a document worthless.
How do trained proofreaders see the errors that escape other eyes? They read in a special way using tools and techniques that focus their attention on everything in the document.
Bring your quality-control questions and problems to solve. By the end of the day, you’ll be able to see and correct the errors that escape the untrained eye, and thus save your organization from embarrassment or the cost of a reprint. And you’ll leave with a detailed handbook on the seminar content.
We encourage you to bring a laptop (PC or Mac) equipped with MS Word 2007 or newer. Exercise files will be distributed at the seminar.
You will learn how to
- Estimate the time needed for proofreading any product
- Handle bilingual products
- Watch the 19 places where errors hide in text and layout
- See everything on the page by reading like a proofreader
- Compare a manuscript against a laid-out document
- Work efficiently and quickly using checklists and style sheets
- Mark up copy (paper or pdf) using standard proofreaders’ marks
- Proofread web pages
- Automate your work
- Control versions of paper or electronic proofs
- Proofread your own writing or editing
