Volunteering for BoldFace is a great way to get involved with Editors Toronto. By volunteering your time with the blog, you can:

      • maintain strong ties to the Toronto branch;
      • have your name and bio appear on the blog read by members of the largest branch of the Editors Canada; and
     • develop strong working knowledge of standards and best practices in editing, writing, and electronic publishing.

The BoldFace team is made up of energetic and motivated volunteers with a flair for words and a keen eye for detail. To volunteer, you must have a membership status in good standing, previous editing knowledge, and access to Microsoft Word. Writing for BoldFace

BoldFace’s writers produce informative articles about editing, language, communication, publishing, and other industry-relevant topics. Ideas may be pitched to BoldFace, or writers can ask to have topics assigned to them by the editor-in-chief or assistant editor.

Writers are responsible for confirming all factual information and requesting permission for quotations and/or other information as needed, prior to submitting their articles.

The tone of articles should be informal, yet professional. Personal experiences and anecdotes are welcome. Please refer to other articles on BoldFace  and previous issues of Edition to see the writing style used and types of topics covered.

Writers retain copyright for their articles.

Providing photos and illustrations for BoldFace

BoldFace accepts photography and illustrations from volunteer contributors. Artwork may include photos from branch meetings and events, as well as other EAC-wide events. The blog also accepts photos or illustrations of editing-related images and other topical or seasonal images. As a courtesy, photographers should ask members’ permission for their photographs to appear in BoldFace.

Please submit photo and illustration files in .JPG format at a width of at least 640 pixels (can be narrower if image is vertical). For photos of branch members, include the name(s) of those in the photo and indicate whether permission to publish their photo has been granted. All photos and illustrations will be credited to the creators.

Creators retain copyright to their respective photos and illustrations.

Copy editing for BoldFace

BoldFace’s copy editors edit for grammar, spelling, and punctuation and check for conformity to BoldFace style. They also check for consistency of presentation and facts, and they may be required to do some fact checking. Queries to the author should be noted in the document; the managing editor will contact the writer regarding any queries or need for clarification. Mark-up is done in Microsoft Word using track changes.

The BoldFace production cycle

Calls for submissions are periodically sent out to writers to encourage a steady flow of articles. The editor-in-chief or assistant editor reviews each submission and performs a substantive edit, followed by an edit from one other member of the Toronto branch’s executive committee; the articles are then either forwarded to a copy editor or returned to the writer if extra work is needed. A copy editor will be assigned and given a turnaround time of approximately three days. If the copy editor has any queries or if there are any other concerns about the author's meaning at this stage, the author will be contacted; otherwise, the changes will be compiled.  Once the changes have been finalized, the article will be posted on the blog according to our production schedule.
