How to find work
Four ways Editors Canada can help you find work, whether you’re looking for freelance, contract, or a permanent position.
1. Advertise your services in the Online Directory of Editors (ODE). As a member, you can create a profile in the ODE at any time by completing an online form and paying the required fee. You can personalize your profile to highlight your editorial skills and experience. Learn more.
2. Check out the National Job Board. Employers pay to list postings for any paid editing jobs—full-time, freelance, short- and long-term contracts. You need to log into your account to access the job postings.
3. Come out to our monthly branch program meetings to learn about topics related to editing and to socialize with other editors. Some of our program meetings concern finding work, and speaking with fellow editors could result in a great job lead!
4. Raise your professional profile by signing up for volunteer opportunities with the branch: Copy edit and/or write for the Editors Toronto blog, BoldFace. Help our monthly program meetings run smoothly by welcoming members, collecting admissions, or assisting with set-up and teardown. Spread the word about the benefits of an Editors Canada membership at The Word On The Street book and magazine festival.
Once you’ve found work, talk with the employer to identify the expectations and requirements of a project before you get started. Check out these tips, available to Editors Canada members only, for drafting an editorial agreement. You may want to use the Standard Freelance Editorial Agreement as your contract template. The Agreement also provides definitions for different types of editing and spells out what each type does and does not include.
