Session:    Become a better tweditor, one tweet at a time

About the session:

Twitter claims to be “without a doubt the best way to share and discover what is happening right now,” but most editors could be forgiven for shying away from it. After all, you can’t really make money by tweeting, can you? And doesn’t it suck up great gobs of time? Daphne Gray-Grant felt both these concerns, too, but decided to investigate as part of her own experiment in social media. After a few months of effort she has posted more than 2,000 tweets and has more than 1,000 followers. Best of all, she’s figured out the most effective ways to stay “social” in about 15 minutes per day. Let Daphne walk you through Twitter, describe best practices, show cool tweeps to follow and, most importantly, explain how you can “do” Twitter really quickly.

About the session:

A professional copy editor requires a mastery of the rules of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. The copyeditor must also ensure completeness and accuracy of the information presented. Fact-checking is an essential part of the copyeditor’s job.

In this workshop we will review the professional editorial standards relating to accuracy and completeness (also known as fact-checking). We will discuss the various methods copyeditors use to fact-check manuscripts, and we will survey the online resources available for fact-checking.

By the end of this workshop, you will:

  • understand the copyeditor's responsibilities related to fact-checking
  • identify and either correct or query items that should be checked for accuracy
  • recognize when to query or supply missing information
  • know when to correct to query errors in numbers and tables
  • recognize and flag places where citations are needed
  • know how to use the Internet efficiently yet cautiously for fact checking

About the speaker:

Ann-Marie Metten is a Certified Professional Editor who has freelanced as a copyeditor for nearly 30 years and for a variety of clients. She has copyedited and fact-checked  books and magazines for the trade, technical and legal documents for practising professionals, and reports and websites government and non-governmental organizations. This year she is shepherding the copyediting certification exam.

Session:    Introduction to the Public Knowledge Project, including Open Journal Systems

About the session:

This session will provide a beginner-level introduction to the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) and its software. PKP is a collaboration between partners at SFU, UBC, Stanford, and others to develop Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) for scholarly communication.

PKP is best known for Open Journal Systems (OJS), which is used to publish more than 7,500 journals worldwide in 24 languages. OJS automates the process of publishing a journal, from accepting submissions through the peer review process to final publication, with an emphasis on promoting Open Access publishing by decreasing administration costs.

PKP also maintains Open Conference Systems (OCS) and Open Harvester Systems (OHS), and will soon release Open Monograph Press (OMP), targeting the scholarly monograph.

The session will focus primarily on OJS, though other applications will be surveyed and demonstrated briefly. It will cover the community nature of Free Software in general and OJS in particular, and the confluence between Free Software, Open Access, and the academic library.

About the speaker:

Alec Smecher is the lead developer for the Public Knowledge Project, including Open Journal Systems (OJS). He is an advocate of Open Source and Open Access, and has presented workshops on scholarly publishing using OJS on five continents. Beyond his work with PKP, Alec volunteers with Free Geek Vancouver, promoting ethical technology and recycling. Alec's formal training is in the field of computer science and web development. He is a marathon runner, musician, and passionate traveller.

Session:    Online editing: New tools and emerging roles for corporate editors

The scope of a corporate editor is stretching far beyond the world of print. Social media, website integration, and multimedia have dramatically changed the way we work, and what we’re responsible for. Corporate editors not only ensure clear and effective copy, but increasingly help shape and produce a variety of non-print products that support a company’s brand or mission. This change in scope is accompanied by a change in tools, resources, and more specifically, expectations.

This session will explore some of the projects and tools a corporate editor must now embrace — using examples from WorkSafeBC. Successful communications and marketing campaigns depend on an organization’s ability to connect with its audiences — editors need to grow their skills in emerging technologies in order to add value.

About the speaker:

Terence Little, Manager of Corporate Internet Services, oversees electronic communications for WorkSafeBC, focusing on the organization’s internal and external websites. He provides leadership, coordination, and consultation to clients and stakeholders regarding the delivery of effective electronic communications.

After receiving degrees in English literature and Communications, Terence started his career as a freelance writer and editor. He went on to obtain a web-publishing certificate from the University of British Columbia and a master’s in Communications from Royal Roads University. With more than 17 years of experience in the electronic and print publishing industries, Terence volunteers his expertise to a number of arts and community-related boards, and he has spoken at conferences and meetings from coast to coast.

Desktop publishing isn’t quite travelling through hyperspace, but it’s more like it than you may think. In warp-speed travel, as Han Solo said, “without precise calculations we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova.” And in desktop publishing, the quality of your results – and the efficiency with which you achieve them (including the inevitable revisions and global changes in presentation) – likewise depends heavily on how well you set things up in the first place. That doesn’t just mean in your layout file, either: you need to get it right starting with your source documents for maximum efficiency and best results. James Harbeck brings a decade and a half of experience with the DTP workflow to bear in showing you the right setup and process steps to make your desktop publishing feel faster than light.

James Harbeck is a publishing “triple threat”: he writes, edits, and does layout and design. He has handled desktop publishing of everything from one-page ad flyers to monthly magazines to two-inch-thick full-colour consumer-oriented health information binders.
