Thursday pay-as-you-go dinner
Join fellow editors for an informal dinner the night before the conference starts. We are meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 31, at the Thai Garden, 201 Queen Street. Each guest will receive a separate bill. A member of the conference team will be at the restaurant to meet you at 6 p.m., or if you want to walk there with others, another team member will meet you in the lobby of the Lord Elgin Hotel at 5:45 to guide the way.
We’ll need to know numbers, so if you want to attend, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with “pre-conference dinner” in the subject line by May 11, 2012. During the week leading up to the conference we will contact you to confirm that you are still interested.
Take advantage of even more professional development opportunities with our pre-conference workshops. These four half-day seminars are held Friday, June 1, at the Ottawa Convention Centre before the conference welcome reception. They are not included in the conference registration fee, but you can sign up and pay for them online when you register for the conference.
Take a guided cycling trip along Ottawa’s canal-side bike paths, on Friday, June 1, at 1:30 p.m. RentABike will provide bicycles and helmets and take us on a two-hour trip from downtown to Hartwell’s Locks beside Carleton University, around Dow’s Lake and back. All cycling will be on paved paths with no hills. The cost per person will depend on our numbers but will be less than $25 each. To register, please email email@example.com with “bike tour” in the subject line by May 11, 2012. You will be contacted for confirmation the week before the conference.
Tour of Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings
Visit the centre stage of Canadian democracy by taking a guided tour of the Centre Block of Parliament. We have a tour booked for EAC at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, June 1. Tours range from 20 minutes to 60 minutes depending on parliamentary activity, and they can be cancelled altogether because of unforeseen events like demonstrations and special parliamentary debates. The tour is free of charge, but we have to register and we will be charged if we don’t show up! To sign up for our tour, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with “tour of Parliament” in the subject line by May 11, 2012. We will get in touch with you the week before the conference to confirm.
Go Wild Ottawa Style! Pack your plumage and wear your stripes with pride on Friday, June 1, 5–7 p.m. at the Ottawa Convention Centre. Put on your feathers, stripes, spots or any other animal theme to meet Fox & Squirrel and kick off a great conference. An Algonquin elder will welcome us, an Aboriginal women’s drum group will perform traditional songs and EAC’s own Marie-Lynn Hammond will entertain us with a song or two. One ticket to the Welcome Reception is included with conference registration. Extra tickets are $25 and can be ordered for guests not registered for the conference.
Hear ye, hear ye! Calling all word nerds! For the first time ever, you are invited to join the Exclamation Mart at our national conference June 1–3, at the Ottawa Convention Centre. During lunches and breaks on both Saturday and Sunday, tables will be available for exhibiting your hidden talents. If you have a side business, such as gift cards or artisan crafts, or if you have books to sell, sign up to display your wares. Email us by May 4 to let us know the nature of your product, and if you'd like an onsite volunteer to staff your table so you have more time for yourself.
Here's the fine print: the fee for an exhibit table is 15% of your sales; some restrictions on products may apply due to venue terms (e.g., no food or tourism items). Space is limited so sign up soon!
The Lord Elgin Hotel will be the site of this year’s Awards Banquet on Saturday, June 2. Presentations include the Tom Fairley Award for Editorial Excellence, Claudette Upton Scholarship, the Lee d’Anjou Award and President's Award, and the Oops Awards. The banquet includes a three-course dinner and glass of wine. Additional tickets can be purchased for your guests—$75 EAC and ISC members; $75 non-members.
ISC conference and CLA trade show
Expand your territory! You can also attend the Indexing Society of Canada (ISC) conference and the Canadian Library Association (CLA) trade show at their discounted member rates. All our events are happening on the same weekend.
EAC Annual General Meeting
All current EAC members are welcome to attend the AGM. Only members with voting privileges can vote on motions. Before the formal part of the meeting commences, we will congratulate EAC's newest certified editors. More details on the 2012 AGM will be posted here in early May.
