April 17, 2012: Making the most of Conference 2012 is as easy as (June) 1–2–3!
Friday, June 1
Email firstname.lastname@example.org by May 11 with “bike tour,” “tour of Parliament” and/or “pre-conference dinner” in the subject line to reserve a spot.
Then, during a 5–7 p.m. reception, show your true stripes, feathers, spots or any other animal theme, and meet Fox and Squirrel at the fabulous Ottawa Convention Centre, site of Conference 2012. An Algonquin elder will welcome us, an Aboriginal women’s drum group will perform traditional songs and EAC’s own Marie-Lynn Hammond will entertain with a song or two.
Saturday, June 2
If you’re a multi-tasking EAC member with books, crafts or other products to sell, take part in this year’s Exclamation Mart!, running Saturday and Sunday.
• Goods will be displayed during lunches and breaks.
• Some restrictions on products apply.

At night, conference-goers will retire to the stately Lord Elgin hotel for the Awards Banquet.
Sunday, June 3
After two full days of sessions, say farewell to new friends made through Conference Buddies, the program that matches up editors in small groups (to take part, email firstname.lastname@example.org by May 11).
You may also have discovered new friends through Beds for Eds, the conference billeting service. Ottawa–Gatineau residents can still volunteer to host out-of-town members.

Other activities on at the same time include the conference of the Indexing Society of Canada (ISC). EAC members qualify for ISC member rates. And for $10, visit the Canadian Library Association trade show, also at the Ottawa Convention Centre.
With 35-plus sessions ranging from The Great Text Talk Debate to Plain Language in 2012, Conference 2012 is the perfect chance to invest in yourself. Register by May 25. The fee is $430 for EAC members, $290 for student members and $600 for non-members.

March 12, 2012: Register now for early-bird savings
Register today for The landscape of Canadian language: word nerds gone wild and take advantage of the $350 early-bird rate for members. But hurry—after April 11, this discount flies the coop (rate increases to $430). The rate for student members is $290.
Non-members are welcome, so encourage fellow word nerds to join us in Ottawa June 1–3.

February 23, 2012: Be wildly stylish at Ottawa’s premier conference venue
EAC Conference 2012 will take place June 1 to 3 in a pretty fantastic habitat. Join Fox and Squirrel at the newly renovated Ottawa Convention Centre (take a video tour). Overlooking the historic Rideau Canal, the Ottawa Convention Centre is steps away from Parliament Hill, the ByWard Market, and many world-class restaurants and boutiques.

Need recommendations on where to stay? Browse suggested hotels, bed and breakfasts and other accommodations. Billeting with local EAC members is another option.
For the first time, the conference’s vendor fair will be open to EAC members with side businesses who want to display their wares. Stay tuned for details on vendor requirements and how to apply.
Take advantage of the wonderfully wild early-bird savings available to EAC members. Until April 11, the conference fees are $350 for members and $290 for student members. After that, the fees increase to $430 for members and $370 for student members. Registration opens February 23.
Conference 2012 has something for everyone.
- We have four pre-conference workshops.
- There’s an evening reception with live entertainment to kick off the conference.
- We’re offering 35 sessions covering a broad range of great topics, including editing e-books, developing terminology, editing translations and mastering plain language. In addition, speed mentoring and the senior editors’ roundtable will also be offered.
- And Conference Buddies is back! If you’d rather travel with the pack than forage independently, this program is for you. If you’re a born leader, consider being the lead buddy of a group—group leaders are needed to make this program work!
Get involved: volunteer. We still need on-site volunteers plus another photographer.

Planning to attend the conference in Ottawa on June 1–3? Why not volunteer? We are looking for a number of volunteers to help out on-site. Photographers are needed to shoot us in our natural habitat. We also need hosts for the professional development sessions, volunteers to staff the registration desk, people to help out at the vendor fair, and more. In addition to on-site volunteers, we need a volunteer coordinator to recruit volunteers and organize on-site training, and we need people to help with the translation of Conference 2012 communications. Find out how you can help.
Don’t forget: early-bird conference registration is from February 23 to April 11. The early-bird fees are $350 for EAC members ($290 for student members). After April 11, the fees increase to $430 for EAC members ($370 for student members). For non-members, the fee is $600 ($550 for students). Find out more.
Stay tuned for news about speakers and sessions. There will be around 35 sessions centred on five general streams (editing, language, career building, tools and tips, and legal issues) as well as some wonderfully wild pre-conference workshops.

January 19, 2012: Call for Conference Session Proposals from EAC Members
Is 2012 the year in which you plan to unleash your dynamic inner speaker—or re-release it? If you have an idea about a presentation you'd like to give at Conference 2012, we’re all ears. You can submit details about your presentation idea to the conference team by downloading the online form.
We’re also looking for some speakers with specific insights for certain workshops. Do you have experience in the following, or know someone who does? If so, please contact us.
• The advantages of having EAC certification, and how to prepare for certification tests
• Crisis or risk communications
• Working with international clients: how to tell if they're legitimate, what to do about payment or non-payment, etc.
• The francophone perspective on “What is Canadian Language” (we’re looking for a francophone EAC member to participate on a panel).
The deadline for submitting presentation ideas is Thursday, February 2, 2012.
Conference Speaker Coordinator
December 12, 2011: Former Speaker of the House of Commons Peter Milliken to Be Closing Keynote Speaker
Order, order! It gives us great pleasure to announce that Canada’s longest-serving Speaker of the House of Commons, Peter Milliken, will be the closing keynote speaker at Conference 2012 in Ottawa, June 1 to 3.
Born and raised in Kingston, Peter is a graduate of Queen's University and Dalhousie University. Crossing the Atlantic, he also earned an MA in Jurisprudence from Oxford University. Peter practised law from 1973 until he was elected Member of Parliament for Kingston-and-the-Islands in 1988. Local voters returned him in 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006, and 2008, making him the longest-serving MP in Kingston's history.
In 2001, MPs elected Mr. Milliken to be their Speaker. He was acclaimed to the post in 2004. After the 2006 and 2008 general elections, Mr. Milliken was again elected speaker. In 2009 he surpassed the previous record and became the longest-serving Speaker in Canadian history. He retired from politics at the 2011General Election. In May 2001, he received an honorary Doctorate of Laws from the State University New York at Potsdam.
Peter now serves Queen's University as a Fellow in the School of Policy Studies and is an adviser with Cunningham Swan, his former law firm in Kingston.
November 12, 2011: Author Charlotte Gray to be opening keynote speaker
We are pleased to announce that award-winning author Charlotte Gray will kick off Conference 2012 in Ottawa, June 1 to 3. Gray has authored eight acclaimed books of literary non-fiction. These include Sisters in the Wilderness, The Lives of Susanna Moodie and Catharine Parr Traill; Reluctant Genius: The Passionate Life and Inventive Mind of Alexander Graham Bell; and Gray’s latest tome, Gold Diggers, Striking It Rich in the Klondike. Gray’s vast knowledge of Canada and its storied trailblazers make her perfect for launching Conference 2012, whose theme is The Landscape of Canadian Language: Word Nerds Gone Wild (Le paysage langagier du Canada : les mordus des mots se défoulent).
Born in Sheffield, England, and educated at Oxford University and the London School of Economics, Gray began her career in England as a magazine editor and newspaper columnist. After coming to Canada in 1979, she worked as a political commentator, book reviewer, and magazine columnist before turning to biography and popular history.
Gray appears regularly on radio and television as a political and cultural commentator. She is currently chair of the board of Canada’s History Society, which publishes the magazine Canada’s History (formerly The Beaver). October 13, 2011: Planning is under way—and your workshop ideas are helping!
We asked, you answered, and you were wildly enthusiastic to boot! Thanks to all EAC-ACR members who, in late September and early October, suggested possible sessions for EAC National Conference 2012, to be held June 1–3, 2012, in Ottawa. Your passion for language mirrors the 2012 conference theme, The Landscape of Canadian Language: Word Nerds Gone Wild (Le paysage langagier du Canada : les mordus des mots se défoulent).
Great ideas poured in through Twitter (@eac_acr), the EAC discussion group on LinkedIn, Facebook’s EAC presence, the EAC email forum (a.k.a. listserv) and email (email@example.com). And your ideas were as diverse as this vast country we live in: from editing videos, games, and e-books, to working profitably in an editors’ collective, to learning how the brain helps us as readers, writers, and editors, to mastering social media!
Some unique suggestions nicely complemented session ideas that the conference planning team was already considering. Now our task is to finalize the conference line-up from this rich mix of ideas, and book speakers!
