1. TOM FAIRLEY AWARD: Submit your nomination

Do you know an editor who’s made an outstanding contribution to a work published in Canada in English or French during the 2008 calendar year? If so, now’s the time to nominate that person for the 2008 Tom Fairley Award for Editorial Excellence.

This award, which is accompanied by a $2,000 cash prize, recognizes the editor’s often invisible contribution to written communication. The award will be presented at the banquet of EAC’s 30th anniversary conference in Toronto on June 6, 2009.

Deadlines:
1. Friday, January 16, 2009, for the letter of nomination
2. Friday, January 30, 2009, for the supporting documentation and administration fee

Self-nominations are encouraged.

For complete nomination instructions and other information about the award, see www.editors.ca/tomfairley.

2. CONFERENCE 2009: Update

The deadlines for session proposals for the 30th anniversary conference have passed, and the committee is hard at work sorting through them. Thanks to all who contributed the many exciting proposals.

Registration for Conference 2009 will open early next year. Of course, EAC members will be eligible for early-bird registration discounts, so keep an eye on the conference website for details as they emerge. And don’t forget to mark June 5 to 7, 2009, on your calendar. We look forward to welcoming a record number of attendees to Toronto as we celebrate EAC’s 30th anniversary.

Conference 2009 teams up with MagNet super conference
Looking for more professional development and networking opportunities? From June 2 to 5, MagNet, Canada’s Magazine Conference, will be held at the 89 Chestnut Conference Centre, which is also the EAC conference venue. Magazines Canada has partnered with organizations such as the Canadian Authors Association and the Professional Writers Association of Canada to offer sessions for writers and editors. What’s more, EAC members will be able to register for MagNet seminars at a reduced rate.

The Indexing Society of Canada’s conference will take place from June 3 to 4 at St. Michael’s College on the University of Toronto campus—a short distance from 89 Chestnut.

Visit Magazines Canada and the Indexing Society of Canada for more information.

3. MEETING EDITORIAL STANDARDS: Restocked and available for purchase

Last month’s reprint of Meeting Editorial Standards—EAC’s “apprenticeship on a bookshelf”—flew off the shelves. We’re happy to announce that an additional 1,000 perfect-bound editions have been printed and are now available for purchase.

This two-volume educational tool covers core editorial skills in a Canadian context. It is adaptable to the needs of all editors—from beginners who are learning the craft to established professionals who are checking and broadening their knowledge. The approach is suitable for either independent study or course work.

Visit the EAC website for more information about Meeting Editorial Standards or to place an order through our co-publisher, Captus Press.

4. WEBSITE COMMITTEE: Volunteers needed

The website committee is building a task force to improve the EAC site. Come and contribute your knowledge and skills; just a few hours a week is enough. Applications are being accepted until the end of December.

The goals of the task force are to plan, design and implement a new website so it will

  • be easier to navigate
  • have better searching capabilities
  • be more personalized and visual
  • have well-organized, expanded content, both text and multimedia, with contributions from across the country
  • fully support both languages
  • support the association’s strategic goals.

Contact Website Committee chair Ken Weinberg to apply or to get more information.

5. MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS: Designer wanted

EAC is looking for a graphic designer to work on a variety of marketing materials, including a poster, conference print collateral and sponsor packages.

If you or someone you know is interested in working with us on these projects, please respond by January 7, 2009, to communications@editors.ca with a statement of interest that includes the following information:

  • Name
