Biographer (Published August 29)

Biographer needed for Hon. Julius Alexander Isaac.

I am trying to find someone who would be interested in writing a biography of my late husband, the Hon. Julius Alexander Isaac. I have provided some background below.

The late Julius Alexander Isaac passed away on July 16, 2011. Born in Grenada in July, 1928, Justice Isaac came to Toronto where he had relatives and worked at various jobs in order to pay for his education at the University of Toronto (examples: a maintenance worker at the Toronto Star, Toronto book store clerk and as a porter on the Railroad). Justice Isaac was called to the Ontario Bar in 1960. He then worked in private practice, in corporate commercial law and criminal and civil litigation: acted as legal advisor to the Saskatchewan government and various crown corporations, served as senior Magistrate in Grenada and provided legal counsel to the Ontario Securities commission before joining the Department of Justice in 1971. Justice Isaac functioned in various capacities in the federal department for 18 years. During his career as a lawyer he practiced in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta, earning the designation of Queen’s Counsel. He was appointed principal legal adviser to the Attorney General of Canada before becoming a judge of the Supreme Court of Ontario in 1989.  In 1991, Justice Isaac was appointed Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Canada by former prime minister Brian Mulroney, becoming the first Black person to be appointed to this court and to the position of Chief of the Federal court of Canada. Justice Isaac also completed extensive legal work within the Caribbean. He was a supernumerary judge of the Federal court of Canada prior to accepting the post of Chair of Jamaica’s West Kingston Commission of Inquiry. He also made a significant contribution to Grenada’s constitutional reform document, working closely with Professor Simeon McIntosh to produce the first draft for public education titled, Constitutional Review in Grenada. Justice Isaac was deeply involved in community work. He was co-founder of the Grenada Association of Toronto. He also served as co-chair of the James Johnston Chair in Black Studies at Dalhousie University and was a member of the Negro Citizenship Committee, the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, and Black Artists in Action and the Caribbean Cultural Committee. Justice Isaac was also the recipient of the Order of Canada and Silver Jubilee Award of Grenada. In 2003, the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers (CABL) established a scholarship in Justice Isaac’s name at the University of Windsor Faculty of Law. The scholarship is awarded annually to a first-year Black student at the law school to assist Black students who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in education and to the community. The Black Law Students Association of Canada (BLSAC) established the Julius Alexander Isaac Moot (“The Isaac”) in 2008, named after the late Chief Justice. Dalhousie University, the University of Windsor and University of the West Indies also conferred honorary doctorates on him. Perhaps most importantly, he was a role model and mentor to many students, lawyers and judges. He was much loved and admired in this capacity.

Please let me know if you are interested in writing a biography about Julius; or know someone who might be interested.

Thank you very much,

Ann Isaac

Line/Copy Editor (Published August 12)

Short Story and Christian Novel Series Line/Copy Editor Wanted

My name is Cydnie Trenholm, a Canadian author looking for a line/copy editor for two projects:

  1. A steampunk short story about grief (2000 words)
  2. A Christian Young Adult action novel (62,000 words) about an ex-assassin and FBI agent who must go undercover to take down a corporate terrorist organization. This is the 3rd book in a series, and would likely lead to another project (Book 4 of the series).

The novel project won’t be ready for line edits until January 2026, but I thought finding an editor for this short story might help us decide if we’re a good fit for longer projects.

My books deal with faith-subject matter, mental health representation, and the exploration of trauma. Personal experience with any of those isn’t necessary, but would be an asset. If you’d like to read more about the series, you can find out more at www.cydnietrenholm.com/writing.

How to apply: Please send estimates, quotes, or questions to cydnie@cydnietrenholm.com to apply.

Application deadline: September 5, 2025
